I would like to thank everyone who attended Robert’s funeral yesterday, and to everyone who left messages/donations on the obituary page. The chapel which seated 100 people was full. You were all so supportive, and it was lovely to hear from everyone how very well respected and loved Robert was. After monies received at the service and on the obituary page was amalgamated, a total of £1777 was generously donated in his memory to the Royal British Legion. Thank you once again. X

  • Hi Lesley and the Walkerettes. It was an honour to be a part of Rob’s send off. A great turn out fully reflecting the respect he gained from so many other good people. I’m sure Rob, with his love of entertaining, would have been pleased to bring so many friends and family together the way he did. It was great to catch up with some old acquaintances in memory of Rob. It’s such a shame the lunch some of us (from his LAF days) were organising with Rob before his illness couldn’t happen in the end. We will get together soon though and raise a glass. He’s left many happy memories with so many of us. Still remember well the first time I met Rob at Hindhead training centre in 1997 when I offered him a lift back up North and he had to push my Escort Cabriolet (pride and joy at the time!) off the training centre car park to bump start it… he certainly earned his free lift back to Wakey!! Take care and all the best Lesley, Bethan & Helena.

Rob was always supportive of all our charity efforts. This photo is from April 2016 when he joined the first day of a 75 mile charity walk. He made sure we popped into the village pub in Tatenhill en route! He will be sadly missed.

We have so many happy memories of time spent with our new neighbours, Robert and Lesley, when we moved to Wakefield in 1997, who soon became close friends. As our little girls grew up together, many a weekend ended with family barbecues in our back gardens, or Saturday night buffets watching Strictly, at which Robert was a most generous and convivial host. We would play Trivial Pursuit, where the depth of his general knowledge shone through; he was particularly difficult to beat on the subject of sport! New Year’s Eve was regularly celebrated together, even after the Walkers – our ‘long distance neighbours’ - moved away to Burton.
We enjoyed Robert’s brilliant organisational skills on an amazing holiday to Florida, one of 10 family holidays we’ve shared with the Walkers over the years. He had a spreadsheet to ensure that things ran smoothly, and each person, including the children, chose the itinerary for one whole day, with communal decisions for the remainder; it was a wonderful, unforgettable holiday. Since the children have grown up, we’ve continued to holiday as couples, and enjoyed exploring new places at home and abroad, trying out restaurants, and then discussing what Robert would write about said restaurants on TripAdvisor when we got home!
Robert was full of gratitude, and enjoyed every opportunity to celebrate the special moments in life. It has been a pleasure and a privilege for us to have been included in Walker family celebrations for all the significant milestones. Whether at home for one of Robert’s amazing roast dinners, with the best Yorkshire pudding you’ll ever taste, or out in a restaurant, the conversation always flowed and there was lots of laughter.
Robert was a dear friend to all four of us, a constant presence in our family’s life for over 25 years, and made our world a brighter place. We are devastated by his tragic loss, and our hearts go out to Lesley, Bethan and Helena.
Ian, Joanne, Becky and Kathryn McManus

Really sad to hear this dreadful news. Rob was a witty, kind & caring person who will be missed. His ‘A Day in the Life of’ leaving speeches are legendary & his ‘View from my study’ Facebook posts made Lesley’s mini famous. Love & condolences to Lesley, Bethan & Helena from Judith & Haydn
