In loving memory of Jean Burrough who sadly passed away on 30th March 2022. Jean was the heart of a loving family with husband Phil, daughters Jane and Ann, Sons-in-Law Ben and Nick, and five Grandchildren: Ella, Thomas, Emilie, Harry and Evie. Jean and her twin sister Janet were born in Shirebrook and later moved to Broadstairs in Kent. Jean was a natural teacher and thoroughly enjoyed her long teaching career in Reading, Headley and Buriton Schools. She loved, and was loved by, her many close friends. Over the years she has touched many hearts with her joy, kindness, thoughtfulness and her love of nature and crosswords! We are all missing her terribly but know she will always be with us.

The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks by raising money for the Rosemary Foundation.

Philip Burrough donated £300 in memory of Jean

Dear Jean,
Although we only met a couple of times. I always felt I knew you through Ann. I felt very humbled to hear all the beautiful words so many had written and to be a part of your send off. What was so very clear throughout your service was what an amazing Mother and Grandmother you were and how much you were loved.
Rest lovely lady.

Jean was the most perfect neighbour as she gave fantastic support and advice to me as a new mother. We were both teachers and I had enormous respect for her approach to children which was to celebrate the best in every one of them. We borrowed many onions and tins of tomatoes from each other. She was never judgmental, was a great listener and had a fund of stories that had me laughing. There are so many wonderful things about Jean I will treasure in my heart - her sense of humour, her turn of phrase, her ability to laugh at herself and be gleeful and naughty. She loved an auction and accompanied me to one at which we were thrilled to see my mother-in-law's Toby jugs fetch more than 10 times the auctioneers estimate. She enjoyed food and wine and we had many a fine dining experience at Derek's annual wine dinners. Go well Jean. xxx

Jean was the best neighbour I ever had, supporting me as a young wife and mother.
My baby would instantly calm as she took over my pacing up and down with him!
Although not neighbours for long Jean we quickly became friends and we had many laughs together, I have fond memories of that twinkle in her eye and cheeky laugh.
Jean loved her family more than anything and was so proud of you all.

Allan and I send our heartfelt condolences as we shall not be able to attend Jean's funeral but we do send peace and love to you all.

Janet Patrick, Jean's twin sister

I was born in Langwith an hour before Jean so I have always had the privilege of being the elder sister but unfortunately not the boss!!
In 2012 I had a stroke and Jean suggested she came up to Cumbria and we visited my tiny very premature granddaughter so we had our first holiday together for years. It was very successful and so I arranged various holidays together for several years. We had taken our children when small to Hubberholme camping together with Colin and Phil. We enjoyed holidays together as we shared many interests, church “crawling”, the countryside, and our joyful evening meals. Jean always brought a lamb korma at our request as it was one of her signature dishes.
She had been my constant companion throughout our youth and at Reading University and since then we have kept in touch first by letter, then phone and latterly of course by email. I shall miss her greatly.

  • We also never forgot our joint families camping holiday at Hubberholme in the Yorkshire dales. We all aided the herding up and dipping of about 1000 sheep one day , also Janet’s delicious cooking under canvas. Wonderful happy memories. Love Phil and family

  • Camping holidays in Hubberholme. Howling rain, tents leaking and flooding, wet and miserable weather - always eclipsed in the memory by sunny days, haymaking, long hours sheep gathering on the moors, Uncle Phil getting soaked sheep dipping and great fun together as two families. Very nice memories Love David, Siwsi and Alice
