Master Mariners are a special breed, and Jack stood amongst the best of them. A Sea Captain to his fingertips... here was a man who held a natural air of benevolent authority... something that comes only to those who know their business and what they are about, completely.

I first met Jack some thirty years ago when he came as an Esso inspector to assess one of our fleet of ships. These usually took upwards of several hours.
Within an hour Jack came back down the quay... "I've met your crew and seen your ship" said Jack - "I've passed her for service". When I asked how he could know so soon when the other inspectors took all day crawling around with clipboards, he replied "Ash, I can usually tell as I walk up the gangway..." And he was invariably right. For Jack had long experience - commanding ships all over the world; he didn't have to look at the tanker rule book - he'd written it.

Above all, fellow mariners liked and respected Jack as he had a no-nonsense, pragmatic manner - the consummate true-seasoned professional. We shall not see his like again.

Fare thee well Skipper, I shan't forget our last conversation.

Jack always had time for my daughter and loved teaching her chart work and telling her his stories of being at sea
