In loving memory of Roy Henry Hollands who sadly passed away on 22nd January 2022
A boy from Charlton
A husband to Jean, a father to Stuart and Alison and grandfather to Joe, Leah, Ellie and Toby.
Dad was born in Charlton, surrounded by aunts, uncles and cousins. With the streets of Charlton being his playground, he and his friends certainly cut some capers.
Living a street away from Charlton Athletic football club, Dad became a lifelong supporter.
Whilst at school Dad was involved with all sports - football, wicket keeper and athletics, which he also certainly encouraged his children to try through both childhood and adulthood, supporting us as our coach for Stuart’s football and Alison’s running. He then became our biggest cheerleader and critic.
From attending the local secondary school, he knew his own mind. He did not want to go into the factories, but with not too many options available, he decided to join the Post office; and what a great decision that turned out to be.
But first he was shipped off to Singapore for his National Service with the Signals. Travel and communication took him and his family, far and wide.
After a successful career, he took early retirement from British Telecom and went back to college for carpentry. Picture if you will, the telegraph paper, a flask of tea and Roy in the middle of the canteen with the Youth Training Scheme students. You can only imagine the language of the old man being back at college!!
But did he care? No! His view being, “I’ve supported my family and brought up my children, now it’s time to learn something for pleasure”.
All of this alongside the joys of his grandchildren, walking the dogs, playing golf, tending his prized allotment and the holidays my parents took, all giving him great pleasure and enjoyment (with so many memories).
He certainly learnt a new set of skills in this time; however, the dinosaur was brought out of retirement, after being headhunted and managed a further two more retirements!!
Fast forward 60 years of marriage and a recent celebration for his 85th birthday. He was still active with his allotment, still trying to get the family to eat his brussel sprouts, but it was always lovely to have the vegetable fairy delivery a bag of fresh veggies.
Whilst the games may have become slower, the competitiveness remained whether doing the crossword, playing crib or scrabble.
Dad continued learning about present day technology and staying up to date with the world events and he did so with a smile on his face, a twinkle in his eye and a dry sense of humour, that made many laugh.

Roy was such a remarkable man, he will be missed but never forgotten, our thoughts are with Jean, Alison, Stuart & Family, with love, Sue, Mark & Emily x x x

we’ve only known you a short time but, you were the most amazing neighbour anyone could ask for. Brought a smile to our faces every day, throwing the kids balls back a thousand times over plus all the delicious vegetables you gave us. Like having our grandparents next door.

What a privilege it was to have such an unforgettable uncle as Uncle Roy!A fantastic character, effervescent, funny, knowledgeable, always interested in how you and your family are doing and above all he was always there for me! When I was young he was always there, at family parties, holidays, taking us to football and other days out, when I got married he was on hand and of course he was there when we needed help with the kids! Its an understatement to say you have left a big hole! Love you and will miss you so much!!

I have known Roy for nearly 50 years going back to our enjoyable days at Phoenix Sports Club and more recently at the Golf Club. He always had a great sense of humour, was a great club man and generally a top guy

My husband Chris and I had many a good game of crib with Roy and Jean talking and laughing a lot, we introduced them to the Bexley music club,which they both enjoyed,Roy will be truly missed,all our love to Jean and family xx

Memories are a wonderful thing that we get to keep and remember whenever we feel sad and/or need a pick-me-up.
Will never forget Fatty Cabs after numerous nights out - Roy would come and get us wherever we were and it didn't matter the time, stuff us into the back of his car and take us home safely.
The advice he used to give us playing golf, which club to use, especially when playing his home club course, irrespective of who hitting the ball. Vividly remember Roy saying you will need a 9-iron from here to me. Then saying the same thing to Jane. However, she can hit most golf balls further than me, but he was adamant she only needed a 9-iron and was gob-smacked when she cleared the green completely! Never told Jane to use same club again. LOL
We will both be thinking of Roy, Jean, Alison and all the family. Sending our love from Seattle. Vicky & Jane xx

What a lovely man Roy was, and what a life he lived. Life was never dull working with Roy, as you can see in the attached pictures. His really was a life to be celebrated. Put that megaphone down now, & Rest In Peace, you’ve truly earnt it.
