In loving memory of Joseph Benson who sadly passed away on 8th January 2022, aged 96 years.

Joe Benson was born Jāzeps Beinarovičs in Saldus, Latvia on 18 September 1925. Caught up in the conflict of WW2, Joe survived the front lines, recovered from injury and after the war, joined the Merchant Navy. He sailed the seven seas and settled in Edinburgh, when he met Fay. They married in 1956 and had three children, Karen, Ian and Donna. He also had three grandchildren, Joseph, Phoebe and Rudi. After the kids left home, Fay and Joe moved to a cottage in West Lothian and enjoyed many happy years together until Fay sadly passed away in 2001. Joe moved to live with his eldest daughter and her family in Gillingham in 2016, until, he too, left us. Joe is loved and remembered by his family and friends.

Donations in Joe's memory would be gratefully received for 'The British Red Cross Society' and can be made online via the link on this page.

I think so fondly of your Dad when I look back at 2001 to 2013. I was a new Dad and he had so recently lost your Mum. We used to have great chats whilst Archie would play on the floor. He really was a smashing man, and when pressed had the most extraordinary life story to tell.

After your Dad had been given an emergency response button in case he fell, I would frequently get calls from the council "can you check on Mr Benson". He would usually be cutting a tree down, climbing a ladder or out for a drive, with the button hanging on the door!

He helped me grow beetroots and I gave him my poor attempt at beetroot borscht. He seemed to know something about most things.

We were all so fond of Joe, he was such a wonderful man, forever in our hearts at Canal Cottage.

I am sure he will be sadly missed, sending you and all the family so much love.

Andy, Mairi and family.

My fondest childhood memories are of grandad - his shed of treasures, bonfires and pop songs in the car. Memories of digging up potatoes together, going on walks along the canal and making summer pudding with the berries from his garden.

Blowing you kisses always Grandad.
Love Phoebe xx
