In loving memory of Florence Olive James who sadly passed away on 4th January 2022

"Polly" -aka "Mam" or "Grandma" was born in Hartlepool in 1924 where she lived for 95 years of her life. She was born into a very close family, mother Florrie, dad Tom, sister Eily and brother Les.She had a very happy childhood, enjoyed school and was popular with everyone.
At the end of the war she met and married Phil, her husband of 39 years and they had 2 children, Sue and Philip. To Polly family was everything- all that mattered. They moved to Lacey Grove in 1967 and there Polly met her neighbours, Audrey and Sheila who became her best friends for over 50 years. They were like a second family to her and along with Madge were really supportive when Phil died suddenly in 1988. Polly loved her time living in Lacey Grove, that was her home.
Latterly Polly moved down to live in Wiltshire with her daughter Sue and son-in-law Bob, and here she spent her last 2 years. She enjoyed the chance to be closer to her extended family in the UK, 3 grandsons- Jon, Paul and Mike plus their families and her great grandchildren, Ella, Mia and Joey.
Son Philip lived in New York after his marriage to Nancy but they and their daughter, Heather, came to visit whenever possible. Polly loved being with the family.
Goatacre Manor Care Home did a superb job of looking after Polly in her last couple of months. She was comfortable, relaxed and content in their care. She was very appreciative of all they did for her at this time.
Polly was much loved and will be greatly missed by us all.
As everyone said, " She was a wonderful lady."

  • Audrey will have made a funny comment which has Polly having a good laugh. Two lovely ladies now at rest. They are both deeply missed.

I have so many happy memories of my cousin Polly. I remember card games, as a child, with Aunt Florrie and Uncle Tom and my parents; Christmas parties for the family at our house (when Polly and Phil won most games); watching, with my Mam and Polly when my Dad and Phil played cricket. I also nursed Sue, as Polly must have nursed me! Although I left Hartlepool so many years ago, we stayed in touch. We shared a love of family, both older and new generations, in spite of an age gap. She will be greatly missed, but has left a great legacy for her family. Sylvia

  • This is a lovely photo of Polly with my great-nephew Henry taken in her home in Lacey Grove, Hartlepool. She was a lovely lady, a dear neighbour and friend to us (especially to my late mam, Sheila). She is missed by all of us. May she rest in peace. Martin Hornby, Hartlepool
