Dear Carolyn, I had the pleasure to work with Frank at Surrey County Council and have many happy memories of our time working together. Frank liked his work and was very technically adept. He cared about the detail and I learnt a lot from him. Working as Frank's assistant, you were always looked after. While the job came first (he always joked about being a cruel boss beating assistants with large sticks) he always took a bag of supplies and ensured we had a cup of coffee or tea available, especially when we worked in the cold and wet weather. He was always enjoyed his driving and looked after his car as well as the rest of his technical kit. When travelling to site, our common interests ensured we always had something to discuss. Surveying was supplemented by discussions about driving (he had his driving assessed by Graham Hill, who judged his driving to be very precise and, following our chats, he went on to pass his Advanced Driving exam). Exploration, Iceland, cars, aeroplanes, ships including the Titanic, Bletchley Park, basically we were the Discovery Channel before that came to the UK! I even recall him water-divining to find the route of a culvert and it being correct. Working with that team, at that time, was a particularly happy part of my working life and I feel lucky to have met Frank and got to know him a little. I was contacted by our mutual friend, Edward Doran, am very sorry to hear of his passing. Please send my love and best wishes to all his family. I may not be able to attend the funeral in person, but I will be with you in spirit. With kind regards, Nick Grout
