I wanted to share this photograph. Photos taken before the digital age can be such rare treasures. The picture was taken outside the Moulin Hotel near Pitlochry after a walk up Ben Vrackie. Danny organised this hill-walk, bus and all, as an open invitation to the punters in Heraghty’s – I can still remember the message on the chalkboard. Part of Danny’s eulogy was that he had a gift of bringing people together. Too true! Had it not been for Danny’s passion to share Scotland with us, then many of us in this group wouldn’t have been too fussed to leave Glasgow and take to the hills for the day. Take a closer look and you will not see a hill walking boot amongst us. It is a tribute to Danny that many of us are still friends to this day.

There are some in this photo who are no longer with us. John Mills with his killer one liners and tales of the Shaws and Manus McDaid with his often crabbit way and bang on answers to all the questions to 15 to 1. No doubt they will be around for Danny with a warm welcome and maybe even a rousing belt of Tam O’Shanter from Manus. I hope so.

I was trying to put a date to this picture. probably at least 27 years ago – but looking at Bob Dow’s hair it could be just yesterday…

I am of a mind to see what other treasures may be hiding in the house.

Danny Martin was a friend and will be fondly remembered.

Love from Eddie and Anne McGibbon
