In loving memory of Nicholas Austin Blowers, a gentleman of a bygone era, who loved his wife, children and grandchildren. He passed away peacefully on the morning of 27 March 2021, at home with his loved ones, after a valiant battle with lung cancer. He had incomparable enthusiasm for life, along with curiosity in everything that came with it. He would not take himself too seriously and could find laughter and happiness whatever the situation. We will miss him dearly, especially his unmistakable smile and trademark sense of humour xxxxx

In light of the current restrictions, a small, private family funeral will be held on Friday 9th April 2021.

The district nurses from Nottingham CityCare were extremely helpful to Nicholas over the past few months. The nurses from the Nottingham Hospice also really helped to make our lives better during Nicholas’s final weeks. His wish was to be at home with us at the end, and the care from the hospice nurses a couple of nights a week gave us just a bit more quality time with him.

Nicholas had many interests in life, ranging from art, antiques, Chinese ceramics to music and even the Argentine tango! One cause he felt particularly strong about was helping to reduce the amount of plastic pollution in the world’s oceans, and lessen the harm on our food chains and on the environment. He said that he wished he had more time left in order to really help tackle this issue.

In his memory, we have identified Nottinghamshire Hospice and a charity endorsed by Sir David Attenborough Plastic Oceans UK (also known as Ocean Generation).

Your kind donations will be for these two good causes.

Anyone wishing to send flowers may do so to A. W. Lymn in Wollaton by 10am on Friday 9th April.

Nicholas, we miss you so so much, and this is why - every word of it was you:

"1. A gentleman is generous with his time, wisdom, and resources. He willingly serves others and extends a hand to those in need.
2. A gentleman possesses a positive outlook on life. His humor and consistent encouragement attract others to him.
3. A gentleman is a lifelong learner. He maintains a teachable posture and embraces change for the better.
4. A gentleman models civility in how he treats others. He demonstrates respect, restraint, and personal responsibility in all his interactions. He is honorable, and values and respects others.
5. A gentleman is well-mannered and knows what is appropriate. He is able to navigate various social and professional settings with ease and proficiency. He embraces all people – those from other cultures, as well as individuals from various social and economic backgrounds.
6. A gentleman possesses a strong work ethic. He takes pride in his labor and strives to give his very best. He is trustworthy, loyal, and people speak well of him.
7. A gentleman is confident. His posture and body language communicate a strong personal presence.
8. A gentleman is well-dressed. He knows how to select clothing that is appropriate for any occasion and that will assist him in accomplishing his goals. He is well-groomed and practices good hygiene. He understands that his personal appearance – the way he chooses to dress, groom, and carry himself – opens doors to new opportunities.
9. A gentleman is well-spoken and a generous listener. He knows how to effectively connect with others and communicate his message.
10. A gentleman is known for his integrity. He is a man of his word and follows through with his commitments, whatever the cost. His actions reflect who he has chosen to be and are not based upon the opinions of others." - Deborah King, What Would Mrs King Do?

  • “Grief, I’ve learned, is really just love. It’s all the love you want to give, but cannot. All that unspent love gathers up in the corners of your eyes, the lump in your throat, and in that hollow part of your chest. Grief is just love with no place to go”. ― Jamie Anderson

We lived in the city and worked together every evening till early morning. You'd then drive to Radcliffe on Trent to spend the night at your father's house so you could cook him English breakfast in time in the morning, until he passed away 4 years later. You never missed a day. In the quiet early morning I could hear you starting the engine of your Jaguar, which then roaring passed the house, off to your father's. That was you, disciplined and caring.

  • You were a truly unique gentleman Nicholas, beautiful in every way. Grief is not just pain. No time will heal. No get over it. Love only deepens when you become truly appreciative of someone, their presence, idiosyncrasies, the way they understand and support you. Wish you were still here to do nothing together xxx.

  • Gone too soon. No loss is greater. Love you dearly still, and forever. In our hearts you hold a place no one else will ever fill. “Oh, the comfort, the inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with a person; having neither to weigh thoughts nor measure words, but to pour them all out, just as they are, chaff and grain together, knowing that a faithful hand will take and sift them, keep what is worth keeping, and then, with a breath of kindness, blow the rest away.” ― Dinah Maria Mulock Craik

Thank you everyone for your kind wishes and general donations, in memory of dad. So far Nicholas has raised over £800 for two very good causes - what a legend!

We’re just speaking to tech support to see why the total above has reduced - most probably a glitch with the funeral website.

The way you dealt with your cancer with such astonishing bravery, courage, discipline, and unwavering positive attitude is the testimony of the human spirit and an inspiration for us all. You fought it so hard till the very end, with no complaint, no self-pity. You just dealt with it as it comes, and tried to fix it if you could, whatever the problem. I admire you. You will be loved and sorely missed forever.
