In loving memory of Margaret Gosden who passed peacefully away on 29th December 2020 aged 93 years.

Margaret will be sadly missed by all her family and friends.

Margaret met Hugh at Gosport library where they both worked.
They were married and lived in a flat in Southsea.
Not long after they were married Margaret's dad passed away.
Her mother sold her bungalow then went to live with Margaret and Hugh in their first house.
Hugh continued as a librarian while Margaret was a housewife. They had four children; Chris, Liz, Nick and Kathy
They moved house numerous times as Hugh gained promotions. ...Tunbridge Wells, Midsomer Norton and finally Nottingham.
Margaret and Hugh were active and enthusiastic church members throughout their lives.

When I think of Mum I think of the word Happy.

Mum understood instinctively how to live in the moment and enjoy what was around her.

She would stare at a tree and delight in its colours. I saw just another tree shaped object. But I learned to see.

She would be enthralled by the flowers that I would just walk past. But I learned to see.

She loved the birds and the squirrels and would spend hours enjoying the plants and wildlife in her garden. I used to just see jobs that needed doing in the garden. But I learned to see.

She loved us, her children and she loved Hugh her husband.

Thank you Mum for the love you gave and the wonderful way you saw the world and helped us all to see it.

I love you. I miss you.

Dear Mum
I really cannot believe I’m writing this letter to you today. It always felt as though you would be here forever. I can’t imagine what life is going to be like without you.
I will miss seeing your name pop up on my phone when you call. I’ll miss sitting with you in your garden enjoying the sunshine, the flowers and the birds. I’ll miss our outings to our favourite coffee shops and eating our weight in chocolate cake. It always amazed me how you could eat cake at any time of the day.
Mum, you were such a kind, caring, gentle person. You cared for others all your life. You were so completely selfless and you never once complained. You always had so much to give. I felt so loved and cared for my whole life.
As dementia gradually took little bits of you away you still remained happy, smiley and a little bit cheeky. Jo and Josh often commented on ‘Grandma’s wicked sense of humour’
You were still you right up to the end. It was such a privilege to be able to give just a little bit back to you over the last few years and help to care for you. I feel so grateful that we could all be with you for the last few days, hours and minutes of your life.
Mum, we are all missing you so much. You were an amazing Mum to me and Grandma to Jo and Josh and we all love you very much.
What a huge hole you have left in our lives.
Kathy

  • Mum at ‘The Eagles’, a Haven activity club for the community and church members. She enjoyed discussion, board games, outings, visiting speakers and numerous other activities. Mum really enjoyed Thursdays; visiting Foodbank talking to team members and Foodbank users and then being whisked off to go Luncheon Club. She then returned to The Haven for Eagles Group. A very busy diary!!!

In loving memory of Margaret. We have such warm memories of Margaret - her beautiful smile and infectious sense of humour. I will never forget when she and Hugh came and slept at our house to look after our 3 oldest children when Reuben was being born - they must have been over 70 then and arrived in the middle of the night at very short notice as bright as anything and totally unfazed! Such kind people.
Thinking of all the family. With all our love David, Sally-Ann and Family

  • Thank you for your memory Sally-Ann. Mum and Dad slept over while I went to hospital with my midwife and Roger for the final stage of labour. Mum and Dad valued your family’s friendship and fellowship.

Margaret was a dear friend to me. For several years I looked after her house on a Tuesday morning and it was the highlight of my week. We shared a love for the garden and we would always talk about what was growing. We shared a love for books and I was occasionally allowed to borrow from Margaret's library . We prayed together, read the Bible together and shared our concerns with each other. She was always cheerful, always smiling. For a few years she went with me to Leicester House, to provide tea and talk to the residents. Although she was as old as them, she would insist on helping to serve the tea and wash up afterwards. She joined in with our Eagles social group with great enthusiasm. I will cherish my memories of her. She was a great example to us all of how to grow old gracefully.
