In loving memory of Norma Roy who sadly passed away on 26th November 2020
Norma was born in Huddersfield in 1926 and spent her early years living in London with her mother and father and two brothers. The family moved to a house on the Yorkshire moors where her sister Pauline was born. Norma and her family then moved to Houghton le Spring a small mining town in the North East of England where she spent the rest of her childhood. On leaving school Norma trained as a teacher first teaching in York where she met her husband Ian. They married and had a daughter Fiona. The family moved to Carlisle where Norma taught Art at a local high school. Norma then went on to become the art teacher at Carlisle Technical College until she retired. Norma was thrilled to realise a life long ambition to be an artist. She exhibited and sold paintings over many years and in many parts of the World. She took a leading role in organising the annual Fratery Art Exhibition in Carlisle Cathedral and encouraged local artists to take part. Her most rewarding achievement was to have one of her paintings exhibited in the Mall Gallery London as part of an exhibition by the Royal Society of Water colourists.
Norma took great delight in her family and in all their adventures. She was a wonderful support to all family and friends and would always be there to give help, advice and encouragement. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Norma was greatly loved and will be remembered with a smile.
Lovely lovely lady. She was my art teacher at St Gabriel’s. I also have a painting she did for my husband birthday. His favourite fishing spot on the River Eden.
We have had the privilege of knowing Norma for a long time. She was a very good friend and colleague of my mother in Carlisle. Norma was extremely kind to me when my mother became very ill and helped me greatly during this difficult emotional upheaval. John and I had three young children at the time and she very quickly fitted into the role of surrogate ‘Granny’ while they were growing up. I will always be grateful for her role with the family. She inspired our daughters with their art work and always took time to enquire after their wellbeing. Norma was always very interested in our family. John and I share our gratitude for the emotional support that she so readily gave and she will stay in our memories for ever.

Norma and I,together with Doreen Martin, spent many happy hours playing Scrabble and Upwords.
Our sessions were full of laughter and we had so much in common - we even chose the same clothes to wear on occasions. I learnt a host of things from Norma. She had a wealth of knowledge in that active brain of hers and we shared a love of creative writing.
Thanks Norma for being in my life. as a friend I will never forget you.
