Born on 4th November 1934 in Sunderland, Jim, joined the RAF at the tender age of 15 as a boy entrant. He was part of the 10th entry at RAF Compton Bassett, travelling the world and making lifelong friends and memories along the way.

It was in the RAF that Jim met Hazel, a physical training instructor. They were married in 1956, living and working in Aden and then Malta, in a marriage that would be 64 years long this year.

On leaving the service he joined, what was then known, as the Central Electricity Generating Board, moving to Harrogate in the process and having a long and successful career in a company that he loved working for, and again making lots of long term friends in the process.

Jim was a keen walker, photographer and a student of history. There was very little he didn’t know about both world wars and he could pretty much turn his hand to fix or repair anything, especially cars and motorbikes. He was a story teller par excellence, bringing to life tales from his military service in vivid detail and always with a sense of fun and a respect for historical accuracy.

Jim was a loving and proud family man. He will be very much missed by his wife Hazel, and his three children Louise, Susan and John and his two son in laws Michael and Peter. He was especially proud of his grandchildren, Emma, Chris, Alex, Nick, Harry and Josh and his great grandson, Joseph.

He will also be deeply missed by his family in Sunderland. His sisters, Marian, Pat and Margaret and his (late) brother Tom and their partners John, Maurice, Billy and Carole. Also his family in Wales, sisters in law, Bonny and Doreen. He also leaves nine nephews and nieces, all of whom he was so very fond of. This is his family legacy and it was something that filled him with great pride and joy, especially in his later years.

A service of celebration for Jim’s life will be held in September. Sadly, due to the current restrictions on social gatherings, the memorial will be for immediate family and a small number of friends.

Dad was loved by all for his fun loving spirit, open mindedness and great advice. Everyone could talk to him. He is already much missed.
