Imelda Margaret Reynolds
Imelda or Mel was above all a person with a big heart. She was passionate, involved and sometimes a fiery redhead.
Her love for travel saw her navigate the globe visiting and living in more countries than even Judith Chalmers. She would talk fondly of her visits and entertained the nurses and carers who looked after her in her last days with her tales of travels and exploits.
She never let her illness stop her and was even planning a “road trip” on a truck across Africa for this year (much against the advice of her siblings).
Her love and zest for life meant that she dumbfounded her medical teams by fighting through five bouts of cancer and still remaining smiling and positive and would always answer an enquiry about her health with a typical “Oh I’m fine, how are you?”
Her steely determination saw her rise through the ranks of journalism and led to her settling in Jakarta where she headed up her own NGO. She used her money wisely and was able to buy properties in many corners of the globe.
What has been a comfort to us as a family is the well wishes we have received from all over the world; she was loved and liked in equal measure by anyone who met her. Imelda’s generosity has been a consistent theme in these messages. She’d already given a great deal to other charities including cancer research but was very grateful to Marie Curie and Farleigh in her last difficult few weeks. That is why we have set up this donation page. Please do not send flowers but if you wish please give to our cause so we can in some small way, thank the carers who bring much peace to their patients and support to their families. Dear Friend, I can't believe you have left us.
What a spirit; feisty, fun and fabulous. Many happy memories. Some (read a lot) were spent around our dinner table drinking the wine cellar almost dry, singing 4 Non Blondes hits till the early hours and rushing to work in your `Porsche' the next morning. Or sitting in plastic chairs in the sea on a coral atoll giggling, or impromptu pieces to camera walking around Marbella like two out of work travel presenters, ever competitive each trying to be more expansive than the other. You helped to plan our wedding (well certainly the wine list), argued about most things but mainly the newsroom, but were always there, a constant. Supportive and caring you were remained upbeat, even when life wasn't. We shared happy times, and weathered the bad, with tears and laughter. But your kindness, stoicism and generosity were steadfast. You shared your knowledge and expertise with trainee journalists offering pastoral care, and more than a share of love. All of this I'll miss, including the woooooooo, when something exciting was revealed. I'm not sure you ever picked up that particularly fashionable (read not) green jumper which took up semi-permanent residence in your old room. If you did I hope you are reunited, enjoying a glass of your favourite wine around a table discussing and arguing about life and love.

I worked with Imelda back then in 2004-2006 in Jakarta, Indonesia. She was one of the most enthusiast I have ever know. Strong motivation for life and her work. I am so lucky to have met Mel, and stayed with her for three years while I studied at Writtle. She was a lovely person to be with, and loved to share her many wonderful stories of the people she had met and the fascinating places she had been.
No words can truly describe Mel; her zest for life; her enthusiasm; her bravery. Even through her battle with cancer, she remained bright and cheerful and brightened the lives of me and everyone she knew with her good humour, kindness and generosity.
She was truly inspirational. On top of that, her documentaries and journalism work helped countless others. She was a selfless and kind-hearted friend who I feel privileged to have known, though only for a few years.
You are greatly missed, but will always be with me in spirit. Rest in peace, Imelda.

Otmiers! We worked, traveled, learnt together. We got upset to each other too. But we also went to karaoke together.
