In loving memory of Kenneth William Chine who sadly passed away on 10th April 2020.

Ken was born on 24th September 1930 to Bill and Ivy Chine in East Ham London, the oldest of 3 children.
He moved to Somerville Road, Chadwell Heath with his sister Alma in 1938 where his brother Ray was born in 1939. The family were evacuated to the country when the raids on London started but his Dad remained as he was a bus driver. The family returned not long after, and Ken would help on Rudge’s Farm at the weekends and holidays, especially with the Shire horses and on a milk round.
Ken went to Wanstead County High School and then in 1947 joined the Commercial Union Assurance Company in Gants Hill. In 1948 he did his National Service with the RAF in Hong Kong, returning to continue working at Commercial Union in Life and Pensions for 40 years until his retirement in 1987.
Ken met Jackie Lawrance at work, and they were married in July 1956. Not long after they moved to a new house in Gidea Park where their two daughters Lesley and Carol were born.
Promotions at work meant that Ken and Jackie moved several times during their married life – Nottingham, Cheshunt where Graham their son was born, Harpenden, and Ingatestone when Ken became Regional Life and Pensions Manager of the centre in Romford.
Ken and Jackie had six grandchildren who brought them great joy and were extremely supportive and proud of all their achievements.
When Ken retired in 1987, they moved to Monks Eleigh in Suffolk and both took up bowls which they continued to enjoy when they moved to Braintree ten years later.
Bowls was later to play a big part in Ken’s retirement, especially after his wife Jackie died suddenly in 2002, and he became involved in running the bar, working as the Green Ranger and on the management committee. His support of Braintree Bowls Club was recognised when he received the County President’s Certificate of Merit in 2016, an honour he and his family were immensely proud of.
Ken moved to the Hawthorns Retirement Home in 2017 and continued to enjoy and live a very active life with his family and friends until he suddenly became ill and died at the age of 89 on 10th April 2020 as a result of Covid-19.
We have had a private funeral due to the current restrictions and we plan to have a memorial in the future so that his family and all of his friends can have the opportunity to pay their respects and say goodbye.

The news of my dear brother Ken's passing on Good Friday, was the most very sad time for me and all the family.
Over the years we have enjoyed many times together, playing tennis and holidays, cherished many happy memories.
He helped me in so many ways, finding my flat at Hawthorns and taking care of me when I was ill. He was liked and would help others if needed, but that was Ken.
We would talk about our life at home with mum and dad and brother Ray,and had plenty of laughs.
I feel blessed that I was able to share the last eight months of his life at Hawthorns. He will be greatly missed now and always.
A lovely brother,from a ever loving sister.
God Bless. Alma

I have lost my dads brother, my Uncle Ken. All I have is fond memories of Ken an integral part of my memories as a child surrounded by the love and closeness of our family.
An extremely kind and generous man who was so loved and admired by all those who knew him. To lose him so unexpectedly has come as a great shock.
He is now at peace with those closest to him who have gone before him but he will remain in our thoughts and memories.
God bless you Ken you will be sorely missed

Ken was a special man and he was respected and loved by all who knew him. He was generous in spirit and was always ready to help and give time to others.

I am honoured to be able to have called him my father in law- he welcomed me into his family from the start and took joy in all the steps Lesley and I took. He was treasured by his grandchildren who in later years referred to him simply as the legend that is Ken Chine.

He will be sorely missed but ever present in our hearts

When I joined the Bowls club in 2006, Ken tried to get me to help behind the bar, but I was still working at the time and my adding up in the head was rubbish. I think it was about 2012 when I joined the Green Team, working under Ken. He was an amazing guy to be around with, very good man management skills with incredible sense of humor. He was extremely generous paying for our end of season Green Keepers meal on at least two occasions plus a bottle of wine each Christmas. I have a blazer, wet gear and cap he gave me. Wonderful memories of Ken. Tony Heales

As I read the other messages posted, it’s clear that Ken was the very best of us all. More than once it is said he had time for everyone and that is true for us as he came and watched Matthew our son play in two cup finals (one with Graham).
He will be greatly missed and I thank him for taking me to my first match at Upton Park with Lesley and Carol. So kind, positive, thoughtful and there for everyone. Rest in peace Ken.

Kenneth Chine was my son's father-in-law and when my husband died in 1992 Ken was a source of strength to me and my sons, someone to call upon for help and advice always ready to help and that has continued over the years. Ken was a great family man very proud of what his daughters and six grandchildren had achieved .
Always a Gentleman, loved and respected by all who knew him.
Rest in Peace dear friend it was a pleasure to know you.

I have known Ken since 2012 when I joined the club. He was an integral part of the running of the club and was proud of the condition of the playing surface at Braintree and of his 'green team'.
He had a lovely personality and liked a joke. In his time he had obviously been a good bowler and his county recognition was well deserved.
Ken, glad to have known you.

We really got to know Ken in 2004, when I retired fully, as neighbour's as well as members of Braintree Bowls Club. He was also a member of Great Notley's Carpet Bowls Club and was a regular attendee on a Monday and Thursday afternoon.
Ken was very well liked by both club members and his neighbours's in Great Notley.
He always had a smile for everyone and we shall all miss him terribly.
