I was incredibly shocked and saddened to hear of Chas’ passing. We had not been in touch for many years and I thought about him not long ago while reminiscing about the good fun times we all had working at The Spirit Health Club in Taunton. We were all a young group of fitness instructors with our dreams and aspirations still ahead of us. Unfortunately most of us all went in different directions and lost contact. Working with Chas was wonderful- he would always have your back and lighten any mood. We had the best work banter usually initiated by Charles or Steve! What I remember most about Chas is the genuine interest he showed to people. Chas made every person who walked through those doors feel special- people of all walks of life, young and old. Chas was a magnet to people and he had a wonderful way of making people feel comfortable. Those of us who were lucky enough to have had that connection with him knew what it was like to have a true friend. We will arrange a work reunion in Chas’ honour and celebrate the life of a very beautiful man. We send so much love to all of Chas’ family and close friends who are grieving at this time.

So many of my happiest memories involve Chas & then Katie too. From the minute I invaded his & Jakes batchelor life he welcome me with open arms. He was warm, caring & had a wicked sense of humour - I quickly became the subject of many of his wind ups! We enjoyed so many good times exploring the world & the country around us. We laughed hard & made the most of our adventures together, often having to try & tame the boys after too much red wine!

Chas leaves an irreplaceable bear shaped space in our world but our lives are so much richer for having him as part of it. It was truly an honour & a privilege to call him my friend & to have shared a small part of his life with him.

TRIBUTE READ AT CHAS'S FUNERAL (LONG VERSION)

I’m still struggling to believe that Chas is truly gone. It seems like just yesterday that he was speaking as best man at my wedding, cracking jokes and giving me a massive map to find my way back to my house from Kingston St Mary! He was not just my best man, Chas was best man at four weddings, I think that says everything about him. I know there are a huge number who would have liked to be in here in person to pay their respects. I hope that soon we will be able to get everyone together and say goodbye in the way he really deserves.

Chas was a genuine, warm, funny and caring guy. He always encouraged others when they had lost belief and supported all his friends to be the best they could, whether that was surfing or advice on work. He would talk to absolutely anyone, mostly in a pub, but in fact some of his closest friends have come from exactly this; Trevor, Lauren, Jon & Marco.

Chas loved buying things, from golf clubs to fishing rods and every time I saw him, he had a new pair of trainers, even if half the time he brought them in the wrong size. He was so generous, whether it was the first at the bar to buy a round or the time when he picked up the bill for his group of friends at a Curry night.

He was an amazing best friend; like a brother to me and our lives have always been connected, since we met at School over 30 years ago. We worked together, went to the same college and university, lived together in our bachelor pad, played football together, went on holidays, enjoyed live music from U2 to Foo Fighters – three times. When I look back now, we always seem to follow in each other’s footsteps, a testament to the strength of our friendship, that we were never far from each other.

Chas loved all of his family dearly, especially his role of big brother to Tom, Grace & Joe. He was protective and also so proud of their achievements.

I have never seen Chas so happy than the day he married Katie, she was and always will be the love of his life and we knew that the minute we met her. Katie has been a rock for him, especially the last few years and her support for him has been unwavering. He truly could not have found a better person to share his life with. Katie, your friends are here for you now, and we always will be.

Chas was so courageous, dignified and a fighter. He will always be there through the music we all loved, the running man dance, the photos and his memories will carry on and I hope my kids grow up knowing what a best friend means and I hope they have one as amazing as Chas. Although the grief will never disappear, we can only hope that over the years it will get gentler. I feel so proud and honoured to have known Chas, he was a special person who touched all our lives in different ways. Bear – Goodbye my friend, we will miss you so much. You will never be forgotten.

We often joked that Chas didn’t know his own strength. He’d clap you on the back to congratulate you and almost knock you over, pull you in for a hug and accidentally put you in a headlock, or on one occasion I particularly remember he somehow managed to break the car I had taken him to test drive with me. There must be countless household items of his friends and family that have suffered and numerous stories to go with them.

But the thing I think he really didn’t know was the strength of his own love. The people sitting in and outside here today, the flowers, cards, messages and posts that we’ve all received are testament how strong it was. Chas loved hard and he loved fully: it travelled far and wide and in that way he really didn’t know his own strength.

I will never ever stop missing you Chas. After every stupid brother-sister fight we had, we always apologised and made sure we said we loved each other. And that love will never end xxx

Treasured memories of my loving husband by Katie

I will always remember....

The day we first met! Thanks to our friends' excellent matchmaking skills!

Your loving, caring, loyal and fun personality, not to forget those moments of 'I'm not angry! your getting it confused! I'm passionate! It's the Maltese passion in me!'

Your smile and wicked sense of humour, your mostly inappropriate but hilarious jokes! 'good job at least my wife finds me funny' you would say!

Soaking up the sun on our favourite beaches in Portugal

Hilarious beer fuelled nights out with our friends and family! Along with plenty of bottles of red milk! Nothing wrong with a couple of glasses of red milk is there!?

Our fun filled trip to New York! Watching Jazz in the Blue Note!

Sunny walks along the Somerset coast line, enjoying some of your favourite fishing spots.

You teaching me to surf! Well, body board to be fair! Rash tops, itch vests and scratch tops or whatever I used to call them! I'd always get it wrong and we would laugh so much!

Getting engaged at Woolacombe Bay! The best surprise ever!

Our amazing wedding day with all our wonderful family and friends!

Beautiful weekends in Cornwall and North Devon, which conveniently seemed to coincide with the need for a new surf board purchase!

So many precious memories I am so grateful we shared together. You will always be with me, with us all forever.
