In loving memory of Eileen Wyatt who sadly passed away on 26th March 2020
Eileen Wyatt (1923-2020)

Eileen Paulson as she was then was born in 1923 and lived in Bracebridge Heath. She was 16 when the Second World War broke out and started work at Waddington railway station soon after as a booking clerk. It was a small station but quite busy with the comings and goings to nearby RAF Waddington. She was moved to Lincoln station and there met Alfred Hennell who was a fireman on the railway. They were married in 1945 and a year later Gillian was born, but due to complications lived only for two days. She was advised not to have any more children, but thankfully she ignored that advice and I was born in 1947. At that time we lived in Spital Street off Newport.

Four years later tragedy struck when my Father died of Polio.

Mum brought me up with the help of my Grandparents and eventually helped me through University and training to be a Chartered Accountant. We moved to the Ermine Estate in 1962. In 1971 I married Pam and two years later Mum married Frederick Wyatt a long term customer at Chambers Flower shop where she worked for many years. My Grandma died about the same time and Mum and Fred moved in with Grandad at Brancaster Drive off Boultham Park Road, to look after him.

Mum and Fred went on many holidays abroad usually with friends and were superb Grandparents to Sarah, Sophie and Alexander, taking them to the seaside and stopping with them after Christmas so We could go skiing. She was also a loving Nan to Fred's Grandaughter Shelley.

Grandad died in 1984 and both Mum and Fred retired soon afterwards. They enjoyed many more years together until Fred's health began to fail, and he died in 2011.

Mum lived on her own for about four years supported by home help, but they only had time for the bare essentials and life was lonely. Eventually she moved to Tanglewood Care Home in Horncastle, which gave her a new lease of life, with carers with whom she could share a joke, and plenty of company. She had six happy years there joining in with all the activities and especially enjoyed playing dominoes.

Mum's Christian faith was very important to her throughout her life and she faithfully prayed every night before sleeping. We always knew that she would be praying for us all which was a great comfort.

In March she contracted a chest complaint and died peacefully in her sleep on 26 March 2020.

My Grandma was the best. Full of love and praise and always smiling. Her roast dinners were cooked to perfection, the vegetables she grew always tasted better, her cuddles were the warmest and her laugh full of joy. She enjoyed the simple things in life - her family, beautiful flowers, a good joke, dancing, a sing-song and was never far from a Werthers Original! She gave me many happy memories I will keep in my heart and treasure forever. God bless you Grandma, I love you x

We only met Eileen a couple of times, but from that we have a lasting impression of a wonderfully warm and caring person who loved card and domino games and, incidentally, played with an adeptness to beat the best!

Our respect deepens even further because she raised such a wonderful son, our dearest friend, to whom she has passed on so many of her own excellent qualities.

Eileen was our cousin, our mothers were sisters, Aunt Lizzie was the eldest child of a large Colson family and our Mum was the youngest, so there was quite the age disparity. Mum was only four years old when Eileen was born so they were close friends (more than Aunt and niece). I remember lots of family get-togethers, lots of laughter and Eileen's lovely face and smile. She was a beautiful woman.
Growing up in Waddington, we used to go to Lincoln shopping with Mum and Aunty Clara and we never missed a visit to the Flower Shop to see Eileen. Part of our very happy childhood memories. One thing I always remember is how everyone said she was a wonderful mother to Peter, and (rightly so) how proud she was of him. I am so glad we got to see her in Horncastle a few years ago, when we were home for a visit from Canada. With love, Trish

  • My sister Trish has written all about out family ties with our beloved Eileen and done such a wonderful job speaking on behalf of all us Donaghy “ kids “ Like Trish I remember the highlights of our week going into Lincoln on the bus and visiting Eileen at the Market was top of the list .. I always marvelled at the bouquets of flowers that Eileen and Miss Chapman used to create for Weddings, Funerals etc ... I think that is where I learnt my appreciation of so many blooms and loved her for that 🌷🌹🌺🌻🌼🌸 The trip that Trish, Andrew and I had to the Tanglewood Home in September 2015 was heartwarming and amazing to find Eileen as spunky as ever enjoying her time there with all the residents and staff... I know how much she will be missed by family and friends with her wonderful smile and laugh ...Love to you all and take some solace in all your beautiful memories , Love Sandy ( nee Sandra Donaghy ) Cotnam and family πŸ’”πŸ™πŸΌπŸ’

Eileen was such a kind, loving and generous person and had a gift for making people feel special. I have so many lovely memories of talking, playing, eating and laughing together. I was so lucky to have her as my Grandma. It was amazing to see her having a new lease of life in Tanglewood, surrounded by new friends, and I'm so thankful for all those who looked after her so well there. Rest in peace Grandma. β€οΈβ€οΈβ€οΈπŸ’πŸŒΉπŸŒ·πŸŒΊπŸŒΈπŸ₯€πŸŒ»
