Mavis and I were very sorry to learn that Mary has passed away so soon after losing Malcolm in March, and we send our deepest sympathy to Judith and Jess at this sad time. The four of us spent many happy times together while Malcolm and I were working for our PhDs in Chemistry at Leeds University. Although our paths diverged when we settled in Canterbury in the mid-60s, we remained in contact over the years and managed to meet up on several occasions. We shall always treasure our fond memories of Mary as a lovely friendly and caring person.
We are sorry that we not able to attend the funeral service, but we will be thinking of you on Monday.

I got to know Mary very well when I went to teach at Parr Lane Primary school. I taught in the Reception class and Mary was my nursery nurse. She was a great support to me and I enjoyed working with her. Mary was a very able person with many talents. She was also very modest. I recall that it was a while before she revealed that she could play the piano. This was a much valued skill and in fact it became clear that she was a very good pianist. After I left the school Doug and I continued enjoying her company and help over many years at Whitefield Methodist church. We missed her a lot when she went "home" to Yorkshire. We send our love and sympathy to Judith and Jess at this sad time.

I'm so sorry to hear of Mary's death; Judith and Jess have had a lot to cope with in recent times. I'm sorry I will not be able to attend the funeral; I am scheduled to have my 2nd Hip Replacement Operation on Monday December 30th, at Borders General Hospital. The 1st one was done in June and was a total success, so I'm hoping for the best. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult and stressful time.

I am sad to learn that Mary has passed away and send my sincere condolences to Judith and Jess.

I met Mary when Malcolm was working for his PhD at Leeds University in the 1960s. She used to come into the laboratories when we were working late- a regular occurrence in those days - for evening coffee and chat sessions which helped to keep us going! She was apart of a special time in my career and I remember her fondly.

We were very saddened to hear Of Mary’s passing away our thoughts are with Judith & Jess. Mary and Malcolm were first neighbours to welcome us in Unsworth. We have fond memories of Mary and Malcolm both of them were very kind and sharing . Mary had a passion for cross stitch and displayed her work in the home . My daughter still follows her ginger biscuit receipe which were so yummy. Our prayers are with Judith and family at this sad time . Rest in peace Mary. We will be attending the funeral.

Malcolm and Mary were two of the first people we met when we came to Whitefield Methodist Church in 1980. Mary was always a most cheerful and encouraging person and very supportive of my ministry. She had the reputation of being a good cook and a welcoming hostess. Our thoughts and prayers are very much centred on Judith and Jess. May you know God’ comfort and presence at this time.

Mum was always busy making something from knitting and sewing to crochet, embroidery and tatting, she created many beautiful things and in later years knitted countless blankets for charity. She was a wonderful baker and baking days were always very exciting to come home and see what had been created! She was a keen sports fan, with an encyclopedic knowledge, and passionate nature lover and bird watcher, a passion she shared especially with my brother Duncan.
Mum spent her life caring for and helping others and I hope she is now finally at rest and reunited with Dad and Duncan.

  • Hi Judith it's Vee your mum and dad's neighborhors from Randall Drive in Bury, Mary and Malcolm were our first friends in Bury after moving over from Liverpool. Those heady days of 1963 moving on to a new development were made all the more memorable with myself and Mary having to shoo away the horses that would roam around the un finished and un fenced estste looking for food !! And when we took over the Chemists shop on the corner of Randale Drive your dad built us a super linen cupboard with louvre doors In return for giving him the lawn mower that we no longer needed !! So sad to hear of your mum's passing, I'm happy that she passed away peacefully. Tony sadly passed away in 2014 after moving to Blackpool. Robert my middle son lives near by and keeps regular company with me. Sadly we will be un able to come to Steeton as we will be spending Christmas in Surrey with my niece. Kindly keep in touch via email, veehill_135@hotmail.com. Regards Vee and Robert
