I first met Brian about 30 years ago, and he became a good friend. He had a gentle demeanor and a soft careful voice. He was a patient teacher but firm in his views. He served as a lecturer and discussant at so many scientific meetings. I recall his reserved (in a British sort of way) excitement describing new scientific results. We talked science and politics on long walks in so many cities throughout the world. Brian shared with me the terrifying experience he had had as a child during the Blitz in London. We also lunched and dined together; biked and skied; visited museums, parks, and historical sites; and attended the theater. I recall his joy when Hannah was born, and we often shared experiences of the children growing. Of course, we collaborated on papers and books. When Brian retired in 2000, I was gratified to be asked to lecture in his honor at the meeting of the British Pharmacological Society in Bradford. Brian is gone and I miss him; the legacy he left for science will endure.
