In loving memory of Roy Payne who sadly passed away on 8th June 2019.
Roy, whose given first name was actually Derek, was born in 1941, second son of Nancy and Leonard Payne. He was born in Bourne, Lincolnshire but the family moved to Stilton in 1953. At that time he had an older brother Douglas, and a younger sister, Janice and two more brothers, Dennis and Brian. In 1957 a baby sister was born called Eunice. Roy and his brothers and sisters all attended Stilton School and somewhere along the way he acquired the nickname ‘Muscles’. His younger brothers were perhaps better known by their nicknames too of ‘Shotty ‘ and ‘Nimrod’. Roy left school at 15 as was the norm.
He went to work for Peterborough Wagon Works earning £3.11 a week. He also worked at Bradshaws at Washingley and a few other places but finally settling down at Perkins where he stayed for the majority of his working life. He never married but was a fixture in the family dynamic, handing out pocket money and holiday treats to all his nieces and his nephew when he saw them. He always remembered to enclose a crisp note or two in their Christmas cards too!
He stayed at the family home after all his siblings had left and when his dad died in 1988 helped to look after his mum and maintain the family home until her death in 2004.
He always had a great interest in cars, once the owner of a brand new Saab Silver Jubilee which was his pride and joy for many years. He also loved classic cars and with his brother Dougie bought and rebuilt several cars between them. He owned and showed several restored vehicles especially when he had extra time on his hand during his retirement. He spent many happy hours browsing the auto jumbles for that special item his car needed.
In his later years he was to be found standing outside in the high street chatting to anyone who passed and watching the world go by. He continued to drive until very recently visiting his two sisters often and getting himself out and about.
It was only in the past 6 months that he suffered a steady decline in his health. He was admitted to Peterborough hospital in April following a fall and died a two months later at a nearby care home.
Roy’s funeral will be held on Tuesday, July 2nd at 2pm at Stilton Church followed by a service at the Peterborough Crematorium at 3pm. Everyone is welcome to attend either or both. The funeral procession will start from his family home in Stilton High Street where all are welcome to follow the hearse on foot a few hundred yards to the church.
