When Goodbye Is Not Enough

We write this for you, Dad, as the tears roll down our face,
A part of us just died that night, a part we can't replace.
They called us to your bedside; it was time for you to fly.
How do you fit a lifetime into a five minute goodbye?
We sat and watched you drift away into an eternal sleep
The memories they cannot take; they're ours for us to keep
Your grandchildren will remember you and always will be told
Of their special Grandfather, who suddenly grew old
Now we've had the sad bit, here is the other side
A man so full of knowledge and also full of pride
He left Valentia Island in the 60's and headed for London’s workforce
But ask him of his background - why, a true Irishman of course
There he met our mother; she soon became his wife
Five children were to follow, and will carry on his life
He loved to study his atlas, and had a vast knowledge of geography
He also reeled off maths equations, as easy as one, two, three
In true Irish style, Dad liked a drop of the old whisky
And with a glass in his hand, he shared great stories of his history
We hope we've summed up briefly this great man ,and would just like to say
“May we take this opportunity to thank you for being here today”
So now the time has finally come as hard as it may seem,
To say we miss you so much, Dad; “Good Luck Now”, “God Bless”, Sweet Dreams!
