In loving memory of Clifford Newton "the Flag Man" who sadly passed away suddenly on 17th November 2018 aged 85 years.

Husband to the late Georgina.

Dad to Denville, Tracy & Selina

Grumps to Matthew, Rebecca, Eden, Yasmin, Luke, Beck & Marley
Great Grumps to Sophie.

Father-in-law to Diane, Tim and Scott.

Friend to many.

1933 Born at 18 Freehold Street, Quorn.

1938 - 1946 Quorn Primary School

1946 - 1948 Humphrey Perkins Secondary Modern School, Barrow-upon-Soar, Leicestershire.

1948 (16th August) - 1952 Apprentice coach and bus builder employed at the Brush Electrical Engineering Co, Loughborough until production ceased in 1952

1952 - 1954 Apprenticeship transferred to the Willowbrook Coachworks, Derby Road. Loughborough.

1954 (28th June) - 1956 (1st July) Army National Service in the 1st. Bn Royal Leicestershire Regiment. XXXX5386 Cpl. Newton C. Obtained Army 3rd Class Certificate of Education. Army Service in Germany, the Sudan and Cyprus (EOKA) Campaign 1955 – 1958 where 371 were KIA in 3 years.

1956 (1st September) Married Georgina of 5 Shelthorpe Avenue, Loughborough. Employed and newly established Dishley Engineering Ltd, Derby Road, Loughborough as their first skilled tradesman restoring and reconditioning military vehicles.

1957 Employed at GC Smith Coachworks Ltd, Long Whatton, Leics, building horse boxes for top equestrian owners i.e. The Queen, Pat Smyth and Colonel Llewellyn. Also rebuilding and restoring Nottingham City Transport trolley buses.

1959 WS Yeates Coachworks Ltd, Derby Road, Loughborough as a coach body builder. 1961 worked in the office of WS Yeates dealing with the assessment of damaged coaches involved in road traffic accidents.

1962 LS Banwell Assessors Ltd. 317 Mansfield Road, Nottingham engaged in the inspection and report of vehicles involved in road traffic accidents and structural collapse.

1965 – 1977 Eagle Star Insurance Co.

1975 Established Newton Newton Flag & Banner business which was run along with ‘daytime’ jobs

1978 YTS training opportunity Hairdressing in Leicester

1979 (February) opened Hadleigh Gents Hairdressing Salon, 117 Drummond Road, Skegness

1983 Bought the redundant Bishop Tozer’s Chapel which had been empty and derelict for 37 years for £5k

1984 Awarded Winston Churchill Memorial Trust Travelling Fellowship to the USA and Canada.

1985 Newton Newton started actually MANUFACTURING from the Chapel on return from the USA.

The rest is history……

I really enjoyed working for Cliff & Georgina, two very kind & generous people. I won’t forget the chats we had, Cliff was so young at heart, a wise soul, had great story’s to tell.If there’s any comfort its that they are together again.

Great friend one of Middle marsh roads true characters can remember being involved in the work on bishop tozers Chapel with my dad Harry Martin lot of great memories will leave a large hole on the lane not many of us originals left on the lane now and Georgina and cliff will always be remembered rest in peace and keep the grass cut up there old fart will miss our chats in the yard sir 😪😪😉
