TRIBUTE FROM ANJA'S BROTHER KALEVI NUUTINEN

---Ikuisesti kiitollinen veljesi Kalevi

Anja was born during the war to a farming and forestry family of four children. During that time everyday life and even staying alive was hard. Father was at war and mother was at home with their children and Anja as the oldest bore already a responsibility for the family in those difficult times. When father returned from the war Anja told, later on, that they did not recognise their own father anymore because he had changed so much in the war abyss. In those times there was shortage of everything and that probably taught her to save and live neatly, nothing was thrown away if it could be used again or be repaired. There was little food and for example flour was distributed a long time after the war through ration cards. Then it was time for me to be born and Anja was then, at the age of 14 in bad temper over it, and had said, when the villagers congratulated her over a new member of family and brother, that she was not happy because there was now another mouth to feed when there’s shortage of everything! Anja then left for Helsinki to work and alongside it achieved her A levels. Also, in this her resilience and precision was rewarded - this achievement was marvelled and much thought of everywhere!
Then into her world arrived an English gentleman and their wedding was celebrated here in Finland in Anja’s home Itälahti and Anja moved to England with her husband. Into their family two magnificent children were born. Anja did visit her homeland every year, visiting her summer cottage till the end - until this summer. She loved her home country and stayed in contact with her family and friends. She lived in the moment, was worried about how the state of the world and of all people. She was able to be proud of people’s achievements and was saddened of their losses and fates. She was worried about the climate change and what this means to our and others’ children. She left a value base in which it is easy to exist to many people. She never gave up and was a brave and wise woman.

Your forever grateful brother Kalevi

TRIBUTE BY MARJA - LIISA LACKMAN – ANJA’S NIECE

Mallu Lackmanin muistoja Anjasta - tämä luettiin siunaustilaisuudessa

Ihminen on kuin tuulen henkäys
hänen päivensä on katuava varjoon
Vaivu varjohon kukkasten
ihana enkeli kotiin vie
Nyt nukkuos untasi rauhaisaa
lepää lehdossa, povessa maan

Man is like a breath of wind
his day is a shadowy shadow
Hard on the shadow of flowers
a wonderful angel takes home
Now you sleep in your dream peace
resting in the foliage, taking the land

DAUGHTER KIRSI'S PERSONAL TRIBUTE

Mum, you meant so much to me and I don’t think i truly realised that until you left us. You were simply always there for me.
I shall miss chatting to you on the phone at the end of a long day at work. I’ll miss you at the Sunday table - you’d always sit down and then get up again saying that you must take your pills and that we should all start eating before the food gets cold. I’ll miss you popping round for a coffee. I’ll miss sitting in the sauna with you and just being. I guess in time, there’ll be much more that I will miss.
You were such a strong person and you gave absolutely everything to Timo and I, not least of all, a little bit of wild paradise at Kiviranta.
Now that you’ve gone everything seems somehow different.
And now, I think I need to take a leaf out of your book and face life and all its challenges with a self-determined mind, strength and courage.

TRIBUTE FROM ANJA'S FAMILY (Rodney, Timo, Kirsi and Mick)

The first part, that describes Anja’s early years, is translated from her brother Kalevi’s tribute that was read out in Finnish.

Anja was born during the war to a farming and forestry family of four children in the village of Tervo. During that time daily life and even staying alive was hard. Father was fighting in the war against the Russians and mother was at home with their children. Anja as the oldest bore, at a very young age, a responsibility for the family in those difficult times. Some years later, Anja told her brother that she and her sister did not recognise their father when he returned from the war because the awful experience had brought about profound changes in him.
In those times there was a shortage of everything and that probably taught her to save and live economically - nothing was thrown away if it could be used again or be repaired. There was little food: for example, flour was distributed a long time after the war through ration cards. Next, it was time for brother Kalevi to be born. Anja was then, at the age of 14, in a bad temper over it and had said, when the villagers congratulated her over a new member of family, that she was not happy because there was now another mouth to feed when there’s a shortage of everything! Shortly after this, Anja left for Helsinki to continue her studies and achieved her A levels. Here too, her resilience and persistence were rewarded; this achievement was celebrated and much thought of everywhere in her village!
Then, into her world arrived an English gentleman!
Rodney first visited Finland in 1959 on a six-month student technical exchange scheme. He met Anja at a dance and they courted for the next six months. At the end of the year Rodney returned home. For the next few years they were only able to meet during summer holidays and Rodney was about to discover the extent of Anja’s determination and singlemindedness!
Returning home late one night in 1962 Rodney’s mother met him on the doorstep looking a little concerned. “You have a visitor”, she said. Yes, Anja had arrived completely unannounced and had taken a nursing post in a local isolation hospital! She stayed in England for a year during which she and Rodney became engaged – mission accomplished. So, Anja returned to Finland and they married in Tervo Church in 1964. Game, set and match!!
Now settled in England, Anja was not content to sit at home as a housewife. Finnish women just did not do that!!! She restarted her career by gaining secretarial qualifications. Her first post was with the Walsall Chamber of Commerce and continued, when the couple moved to Sheffield for a short spell, at Totley Hall Teacher Training College. She took a short career break when the family moved to the Shotley Peninsula in order to devote her full attention to her children in their early formative years. When they started at primary school she recommenced work with the Estates Department of Heath Road Hospital where she stayed for many years before taking early retirement. Throughout her career she gained glowing testimonials from her employers. She was resolved to play a useful role in society as well as performing her duties as a mother to the full.
In 1969 Timo was born and Kirsi arrived in 1971 shortly after the family had moved to Holbrook. Each summer Anja took the children to her home so that they could grow up to appreciate life on a small Finnish farm. This involved picking berries from the marshes and the forest floor, fishing and catching crayfish. The family also took part in traditional haymaking: Anja’s father cut the hay with a hand scythe and the family raked it together before pitchforking it to dry on stakes driven into the ground. A couple of days later the dry hay was transferred onto a hand cart, then pushed to a barn where it was to be stored for the winter. Nice relaxing holidays!!!
In order to maintain close links with her mother country the family’s door was always open to welcome any Finns who wished to visit. Suffolk College had an exchange scheme with Finland and many young students were welcomed to have Sunday lunch and a sauna in the present family house in Tattingstone. In this way Anja was developing an ‘extended family’ of life-long friends. This included one of Timo’s school friends from Hong Kong. It says everything that he has travelled from Hong Kong to be here today along with two other ‘extended family’ members from Finland.
She acted as a regional co-ordinator for the Finnish Church Guild so that Anglo-Finnish families in East Anglia could get together from time to time. As part of this, our house ‘Chestnuts’ has hosted, for many years, a Finnish ‘Little Christmas’ for local families – complete with a live Father Christmas who arrives to the sound of sleigh bells and delivers presents to the children.
In this very church Anja also arranged for an annual Lutheran Church service that attracted Finns from far and wide and Lutherans of other nationalities were also welcomed.
Anja had a strong artistic streak that expressed itself mainly through needlecraft and knitting. She was a qualified seamstress and made many clothes for herself and the family. Anja also made two traditional Finnish wall-hung carpets - each taking some two years to produce. Those of you that attend the reception in our village hall will be able to see a selection of her handiwork on display.
1973 saw the start of a lifelong family project. Anja’s father gave her a plot of land on which to build a lakeside summer cottage so that she could have her own bit of Finland. This started with a modest single-room wooden building with, of course, a sauna. Just offshore from the summer cottage is a large flat rock from which the family swims. So, the name became ‘Kiviranta’ that translates to ‘stone shore’.
As the summer cottage developed with the addition of more buildings, a well and a cellar, Anja was determined to preserve the original spirit of Finnish holiday homes and the family has, to this day, resisted installing electricity or water on tap. This ongoing project has involved a great deal of hard work over many years but it has all been worthwhile because Kiviranta now stands as a living memorial to Anja.
Sadly, however, on the 10th of September this year Anja was faced with a fight that, despite all her grit and determination, she could not win and she passed away. She will be sorely missed by her family and many friends.

Sitten Anjan maailmaan saapui englantilainen herrasmies.
Rodney saapui Suomeen ensikerran vuonna 1959 kuuden kuukauden opiskelijavaihtoon. Hän tapasi Anjan tansseissa ja he seurustelivat seuraavat puoli vuotta. Vuoden lopussa Rodney palasi Englantiin.

Leppoisaa lomanviettoa!
Säilyttääkseen tiiviit yhteydet kotimaahansa Anja toivotti kaikki suomalaiset tervetulleiksi.
Kotimme “Chestnuts” on jo vuosien ajan isännöinyt suomalaisia pikkujouluja paikallisille perheille ja jopa itse joulupukki on saapunut jakamaan lahjoja lapsille poronkellojen siivittämänä.
Vuonna 1973 sai alkunsa koko perheen elinikäinen projekti.

TRIBUTE FROM THE REV. ANNETTE SHANNON, RECTOR, ST. MARY'S TATTINGSTONE

When tragedy strikes in our lives, we are left with a gnawing emptiness. The only thing we can do is weep and cry for the loss we have suffered. To lose a much loved wife, a greatly loved mother, a close friend, brings up intense emotions that no doctor can heal. It is good to weep over any loss, but especially one that happens so suddenly, where you have no chance to care and prepare, no chance to even say goodbye.
We can use this service and the wake afterwards today to say our personal and communal goodbye to Anja, to reflect on the life she lived, to celebrate the joy she brought to those who knew her, and to mourn her passing. We can also remind each other of the hope we have in Jesus.
Two thousand years ago God came to this world as Jesus; He took on our humanity, our frailty, our mortality, our emotions, our pains and our joys. And in His death, Jesus, gave sacrificially, He died on a Cross that we might live. By dying for us here on earth, for all the mistakes we have made, no matter how small or large, Jesus became the Way to eternal life, to eternal joy, to eternal peace with God. Anja was a faithful Christian and lived with that hope in her heart.
God loves all of us more than we can possibly imagine but this love is not a magic amulet that protects us from all pain and loss, it does not give the ability to never be sad or never to mourn, but it is a promise that God is here right now besides us in our grief. He holds out His arms to hold us close, to tell us of a love that defeats even death itself, of a light that destroy all darkness.
It is good and right to weep, at the great loss of Anja; her family, her friends, and this church and community and her Finnish Church community shall miss her deeply. My prayers and sympathies go out to all who are in pain and are left lost because of this sudden tragedy. But let us use this time to remind us of the frailty of this life, that we might live every day to the full. That we might love and live in joy and peace as we remember Anja and the hope that Jesus brings for us now and in that life ahead with him.
