Dave MANSFIELD
(Local Football Referee)
(of Desford)

Passed away suddenly but peacefully on 12th September 2018 at Glenfield Hospital, aged 62 years.

Dave worked for the last 23 years as a security officer at the Glenfield Hospital and before that for Kirby and West as a Milkman. Much of his spare time was spent enjoying his beloved game; football and keeping fit. He was a local referee and enjoyed being in the middle for many of the local leagues on a Saturday and Sunday often taking on three games a weekend plus the Wednesday night Youth Floodlit league. During the week, he had recently taken up Walking football which slotted in around his work shifts and he travelled around Leicestershire to take part in different sessions as well as playing 5-a-side football on a Thursday night. Dave was also often seen around Desford actively walking his two beloved Chocolate Labradors twice a day.

Treasured Husband of Pat (nee Walton), much loved Dad of Vicky and Dave, Laura and Dave and Mark and Lisa. Devoted Grandad of Jacob and Imogen.
Dearly loved Brother-in-Law of Janet and John. Always loved by James, Emily and the late Sarah.

Dave gave his organs for donation as a gift to others, forever generous and wanting to help anyone in need.

Dave’s Funeral Service will take place at Gilroes Crematorium on Friday 5th October at 2.30pm.

No flowers please, donations preferred.

Dave, a good friend of Annie..our times at Glenfield Hospital were the best. So many happy and funny memories of the decent, lovely, genuine man Dave was. I will treasure these memories forever. My heart goes out to Pat, Vicky, Laura and their families..please try to stay strong. Will miss Dave so much but know in my heart that heaven has gained a true gent. God bless Dave. You were one of the best.

  • Does anyone know when this was? Which league/competition it was?

  • This would have been one of the Leicestershire Sunday Youth League Finals which was held at Loughborough Dynamo's ground. I reckon this would have been around 2005 to 2007.

Having worked with Dave for many years, as the Referee Secretary for the Leics Sunday Youth League I was truly saddened to hear the news that Dave had passed away. Dave was a true gent who was glad to go anywhere you asked him and enjoyed his officiating on Sundays week in, week out.
He will be another referee who sadly leaves us far too early and will be missed throughout the Refereeing Community, or The Usual Suspects as they are known.
Will always remember being at Caterpillar on the Midweek Floodlit League, second half starts only for me to turn round and Dave has disappeared in thick fog, brought tears of laughter to my eyes as all i could hear is "Im over here Cornsey" ...
Take care Dave , you will be missed by all.
Cornsey

Dave was a true gent, top referee and someone I could call my friend. I'm honoured to have worked with him so many times over the last 7 years mainly through the Leicestershire Midweek Floodlit Youth League. I still laugh about the time his car got stuck in the muddy car park at Ashby Ivanhoe FC and got home hours after the match finished. Wednesday nights under the lights certainly won't be the same without you mate. I send my deepest condolences to Dave's family

  • Seeing this picture, Dave looks very similar to myself standing there at a cup final. He was a true servant to the game of football at local level. We shall miss him. David Frost Referee and Hinckley Sunday League Secretary
