Clive was born in Epsom 11th January 1944. He was a very independent person and left home at the age of 15 years old to brave the outside world.
He was a member of The Royal Military Police back in 1967. Trust, dependability and integrity were all prerequisites, that's why he fitted in perfectly into this military role.
His working life was extremely varied and the later part was with Thames Water, where he kept the management on their toes but made strong and lasting friendships with his colleagues. his expertise in making a wonderful cup of tea were honed to perfection at Thames Water.
To all who knew Clive, he was a gentleman, his ability to tell an anecdote will be remembered and cherished by many people. He brought happiness and laughter wherever he went, we will all miss him, but he would want to be remembered most of all for this special part of his character.
He made everyone feel special, like you were his only friend, but he had many, many strong friendships in every walk of life.
He loved to offer time and energy to several charities including, Brooklands Museum and The Trigeminal Neuralgia Association to name but a couple. I know he will be remembered for his dedication and ability to work tirelessly for them but keep his wicked sense of humour at all times.
Clive was cremated at Randall's Park Cemetery Leatherhead 9th August 2018, his requests were clear " no service or guests or flowers and that instead anyone wishing to should can donate to RNLI registered charity number 209603" his chosen charity.
In loving memory of Clive David Clifton who sadly passed away on 23rd July 2018 after a brave fight against cancer, he kept his sense of humour to the last.
Rest in peace our dear friend.

Thoughts about Clive
Clive was a valuable member of the Vanguard team.
He joined Brooklands around 1989 working on the Wellington. When the tasks on that aircraft were completed he transferred on to the Vanguard shortly after it`s arrival in 1996.

He was a mind of information, especially drains which the museum used to question him about when they had a problem with them around the hangar and used to cause a flood whenever there was any significant rain.

As for the vanguard he was our Logistics Officer we used to send him to B & Q to wear out his Dimond card many Wednesday`s & I think his Amazon account will cause a sharp downturn in their share price!
His tasks, self-selected, were checking the batteries & recording the findings on a spreadsheet, which he designed & printed, gardening specifically keeping the “patio” area under the propellers clear of weeds and looking neat and tidy.
He also did a lot of work cleaning the aircraft using a hose pipe & broom & was looking forward to seeing the aircraft painted, as we all are.

He was always ready for a cup of tea, something that might have come from his time at Thames Water! He conducted people around the aircraft untiringly and generally involved himself in whatever was going on.
Several of us will think of him every time we switch our computers on & not find that the first six or so emails are jokes from him!
He was a very lovely chap and will be sadly missed by us all.

Paul Essex, Team Leader Vickers Vanguard at Brooklands.

You will be greatly missed, dear Clive. You were a kind and generous person with a great sense of humour and fun but also a dedicated and hardworking charity trustee and supporter of others in pain or trouble. I enjoyed looking back through my photos (see above) to remind myself of the good times we shared.

My mate and one of the best friends anyone could have, shared so many good times in the RMP and after. The adventures we shared, along with others and the amount of beer consumed will never be foregotten.
He gave my wife away when we got married and our eldest son was named after him.
Rest in Peace good friend and when we get RV for the next O Group let us hope the beer will be following.

Very interested to learn more about Clive. He and I seemed to have a similar sense of humour, perhaps it was our Police service. A real gentleman.

  • Having been in contact with Clive in person, by phone and email over the past few years, he shared his knowledge and experience to the benefit of everyone and often did so with great humanity but also, on occasions via a very dry sense of humour. Adrian TNA UK
