In loving memory of Aubrey Winter who sadly passed away on 29th June 2018

Aubrey Herbert Winter ARIBA, retired architect, passed away on 29th June 2018 at the Royal United Hospital, Bath.

Aubrey was born on 13th June 1929 in Little Kimble, Buckinghamshire. He was brought up on Brookside Farm, Little Kimble by his parents. The family moved to Aylesbury in 1938. His father died two days’ before war broke out in 1939, which necessitated a move with his mother and brother to High Wycombe.

After the war, Aubrey served with the Royal Engineers in Germany for his National Service. He met Edith in 1949 in High Wycombe and they were married in Hazlemere Parish Church in July 1956. After a honeymoon in Switzerland,
they moved to Melksham, where they had three children – Jacqueline, Geoffrey and Christopher.

In August 1956, Aubrey opened a branch office in Melksham for his practice, Thurlow, Lucas and Janes. Aubrey was a member of the Wiltshire branch of the Royal Institution of British Architects for many years, including chairmanship.
Aubrey involved himself in many activities, including being a founder member of the Melksham and Corsham Round Table, where he served as chairman 1965–66. During his membership he organised the creation of the Riverside Club, remaining a Trustee for many years.

Aubrey was a founder member and initial chairman of the Wiltshire Building Records. Years later, he became a founder member of Melksham Town Trust and served as inaugural Chairman. Aubrey was a Trustee of the Independent Living Centre at Semington for many years. He was a Governor at Lowbourne Junior School for ten years. He was Chairman of the millennium scheme for creating the Riverside Walk, which runs from Melksham Cemetery. Aubrey was honoured to receive three Community Service Awards over the years for dedicated service to the Community of Melksham.

For recreation, Aubrey enjoyed playing golf at Kingsdown Golf Club, where he was a Trustee and finally President. He was a season ticket holder at Bath Rugby Club for over 30 years. He enjoyed watching cricket, being a member of a Wine Club and was a member of Probus following his retirement. He was a weekly member of the Dining Club in Holt and took a keen interest in his garden.

During his active life, Aubrey made many friends and acquaintances through his interesting ventures, which he hoped would always benefit the town and county in which he lived and loved.

Aubrey is survived by his three children, four grandchildren and one great-grandson.

So sorry to read of Aubrey's death. I worked at the Wycombe office in the late seventies, I recall Melksham office, lead by Aubrey, beating us soundly at the annual skittles match at Christmas.
Co-incidentally, years earlier when I was in the scouts at Union Baptist I mowed his mother's lawn. All good wishes.
