Freda Holden was born in Oldham, Lancashire on the 20 May 1937. An origin of which she was very proud. She was the second child of Alderman George Frederick Holden and his energetic wife, Nancy. Later a very successful and popular Mayor and Mayoress of Oldham. She had an older sister Shirley and younger brother Robin.
Educated at Oldham Hulme Grammar School and the Charlotte Mason [teacher training] College in Ambleside in the Lake District. In April 1962 she married James K Humble OBE. They had three daughters Josephine, Rebecca and Sarah and seven grandchildren James, Ben, Sam, Alice, Tom, Emily and Elliot and a step great-grandchild Charlie.
Her teaching career took her to many schools in Nottingham, Oldham, Nigeria and Croydon but her greatest love was the many years she spent at Bensham Manor Special School in Croydon. She was an insulin dependent diabetic from the age of 13 years and diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2005. She retained much of her vitality and always bore her afflictions with fortitude, good humour, common sense and a ready smile. She never moaned or complained and always stood up for what she believed to be right.
