To Fran and Charles' family, I would like to offer my heartfelt condolences. At a crucial time in my life, Charles offered knowledge, guidance and advice - always with a twinkle in his eye. So many of my lifelong interests began through discussions with Charles. If I asked him about a particular author, the next day he would bring in a book by that author for me to borrow. We would then discuss it once I'd read it. He would never tell me what to think, but I was so grateful to benefit from his opinions. To say he made a huge impact on my life is a big understatement. People make a career out of being a teacher; but no one receives remuneration for being a mentor. That's something else. I hope that one day I too will have the opportunity to act as a mentor to someone else. You see, Charles taught me an important lesson. People matter; and the thrill of aiding someone to learn is one of the most rewarding and altruistic things you can do. Thank you, Charles. You will be sorely missed, but never forgotten.
