In loving memory of Dr Zaine Fais who sadly passed away at Maidstone General Hospital on 9th May 2017 aged 73 years. Devoted to his children he made many sacrifices to ensure his children would have the best start in life and go onto have bright happy futures. Arriving from Sri Lanka in 1977 he struggled to establish himself and build a secure career. Eventually he found a stable position and brought his young wife and baby son over. As his career evolved and he worked very hard to put food on the table he had to deal with many setbacks both in his professional and private life.

After moving to Kent and from West Malling to Dittion, he joined the Maidstone Prison service as a Medical officer and rose to Head Medical Officer a position he held until he retired in 2009. Zaine was greatly respected by his peers and staff he managed as well as from the prisoners and prison guards. One of the most infamous inmates he cared for was one of the Cray brothers.

Zaine did not have the closest of relationships with his two sons, and often fought with his youngest Ricky. However this was only due to Zaine worrying so much about Ricky and wanting to ensure he would be ok after he was gone knowing that Ricky would not have any one left.

It’s June 2026 and I have found the sad news of Fais’ death online. While Fais formative years were spent in Ceylon, Fais’ familial care echoed my UK experience, and I was fortunate to be included in his circle - Fais once complimented me on the cleanliness of my ears, when he examined them. 😊Looking back, I wonder what Fais’ achievements might have been but for racism and its psychology toll. My only experience of the racism the family suffered day to day was at a West Malling video store, when the two till clerks did not bother hide their unkind mimicry of Fais accent. Thank you Fais for all you did for me.

Faiz uncle and his brother Rauf (Poo Maama) were like fathers to me. I love Faiz uncle and miss him so much. Even if he did not know it, many people loved and respected him back at home. He was one of the most interesting people I have known and I miss him. Faiz uncle, I hope you have found your peace now. We love you and will pray for you until the end of time.
