Ken died suddenly at home in the early hours of 9th February 2017, aged 85. His health had been good, and his death has come as a shock to all who knew him.
Ken had a distinguished career of more than 40 years in cancer drug discovery and development, including drugs that are now in current use for lung, ovarian and colorectal cancers. He pioneered a multidisciplinary approach from research laboratory to clinical trial that has become the model for subsequent academic cancer drug discovery departments in the UK. He was appointed CBE in 1998 for his services to cancer research.
He was a keen sailor most of his life, a cricket and rugby fan and a lover of the arts, particularly opera. In retirement he had many other interests. He continued to work as a pharmaceutical consultant with his wife Beverley for 10 years. He joined U3a groups that discussed naval history, science and technology, and was active in the work of the Royal British Legion and in village life in Peaslake, Surrey.
His family will miss his big personality, his passion for a good rugby song and a whisky, and his love.
Ceremony and burial at Clandon Wood Natural Burial Ground (Epsom Road, West Clandon, GU4 7FN) on 7 March 2017 at 1pm and afterwards at The Onslow Arms, Clandon (The Street, West Clandon, GU4 7TE). Ken’s beloved wife Beverley, his daughters Kerry and Gwynne, and granddaughters Hannah and Sophie hope family, friends and colleagues alike will be able to attend.
Family flowers only please. Donations would be very welcome to two charities Ken supported for many years: Cancer Research UK and the RNLI.

Please make sure you are wearing suitable footwear for the natural burial ground - there are only rough paths and it may be wet and muddy.

He was such an amazing boss. Loved his rugby. So sad to hear of his passing.

Ken provided outstanding leadership to development of new cancer therapies, and as a colleague provided invaluable support and advice to our related research. He encouraged staff at all levels, helping to make our Institute a better place to work, as well as to succeed. My sympathy to Beverley and family.

I have such fond memories of the E block days at the ICR. Ken was a giant in many ways and work was a lot of fun.
We used to wear our national rugby shirts on the then 5 nation championship and have a bet on each game....

Ken gave me unfailing support during my time at ICR for which I will always be grateful. He was a great scientist and a warm human being; my thoughts go out to Beverley at this sad time.

Ken/Beverley unfortunately I am away on holiday so mum is unable to attend the funeral. She will always remember you Ken with great fondness and always talks about those childhood memories. Mum will be thinking you all on the day. Rest in peace Ken xx

Ken and his team enabled my husband to have three more years after being diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. He was treated with one of the drugs Ken developed. Many thanks Betty (cousin)
