In loving memory of Eric Sayers who sadly passed away on 1st March 2016. A beloved, Father, Granddad and Great Granddad.

We have been moved by the warmth, love and words dad has been referred to in conversation. We have had many comments about his sense of humour and the care he showed to others.

Dad was born and bred Bermondsey, having worked for Whitbreads, a local building company down Rotherhithe New Road, then moving to Bermondsey/Southwark Council where he spent 39 happy years. Between him and mum they also ran Eric and Rita’s Sweet Shop at 240 St. James Road for a while, only stopping when the building was classified as unsafe.

In the late 70s, mum and dad moved to the brand new Setchell Estate and became central parts of the tenants and residents association, until they moved in 1983.

During this time, along with being the association’s treasurer, Dad also took up singing as part of the ‘Setchell Chorus Christmas Show’, this later grew into the ‘Bermondsey Chorus’ which travelled around the borough and beyond preforming at many nursing homes and parties for the elderly. Upon retiring he joined Morley College and spent many enjoyable years practicing and performing in various college shows.

Dad loved tinkering and rarely threw anything away, including wood and other useful materials. He always found a use for them in jobs he would create for himself.

We have many memories of Dad, please feel free to share yours.

Dad, Eric, a good old Bermondsey Boy.

Eric,

You had a great life and many stories to tell, from playing on bomb sites as a child to enjoying working for Bermondsey and Southwark Council and the sweet shop.

I will always remember the precious time we spent together, from the many, many meals and drinks (pie and mash, fish and chips, the Wibbly Wobbly, Moby Dick and your favourite American diner) and quiz nights; Christmas; Condorline; your 80th birthday party where you were surrounded by all your loved ones; going to the Edinburgh Tattoo and the nights you stayed over.

You have left a gaping big hole in both our hearts and our lives. Many tears will be shed but I will remember all the time we spent together with a smile.

You will live in my heart forever.

I love you xx
