Grazel Ena Haverly (née Williams) was born on May 3rd, 1953, in Lyssons, St. Thomas, Jamaica, to Elma Maud and Samuel Sylvester Williams. She was the fourth of nine siblings. Grazel attended Morant Bay Primary School until she was sixteen, then went on to become an apprentice teacher at the Seventh Day Adventist School in Morant Bay. A year later, Grazel and three of her siblings left Jamaica for England to join their parents in Leamington Spa. There, Grazel held the position of "big sister."
It didn't take her long to decide what she wanted to do with her life — it was between teaching and nursing. She had tried teaching in Jamaica but decided to pursue nursing in England. Soon afterward, Grazel joined nursing school as a cadet and trained until she became fully qualified. She worked at Warnford Hospital for a time before transferring to the Nuffield Hospital in Oxford.
It was after returning from Oxford that Grazel made the decision that would drive her life until the end: she accepted the Lord and followed Him fervently, bringing others along with her. Grazel then returned to Leamington Spa for another season, working at Heathcote Hospital. Within a few years, she moved to Bristol, where she worked at the Winford and BRI Hospitals. It was while living in Bristol that Grazel met and married her first husband, Stephen Robinson, and relocated to Sunderland. After years of marriage, Stephen passed away suddenly. Grazel continued her nursing career and eventually retired at fifty-five.
Retirement, for Grazel, meant travelling and that was exactly the plan she carried out.
After fourteen years of widowhood, Grazel met Ian Haverly, and they were married in 2018. Not long afterward, she developed mobility issues that gradually led to her disablement.
On June 24th, 2026 — just hours before her beloved sister Medessa Beverly Hunt ("Bev”) Grazel suddenly left this life.
Grazel is survived by her husband, Ian Haverly, and her siblings: Monica, Alvin, Jennifer, Deloritta, Rose, and Sylvester.
Family and friends please meet on Friday July 31st for a service to celebrate Grazel’s life in Sunderland Crematorium at 1.00pm. Donations in lieu of flowers will be gratefully received for charity to be determined by Grazel's family. A donation box will be available at the crematorium. All are welcome afterwards to continue the celebration of her life in The Rosedene, Sunderland.
