John was one in a million.
John was a man of firm principles, honest convictions, and a quiet gentleness that revealed itself to those who truly knew him.
John’s childhood was profoundly shaped by the Second World War. At just seven years old, he became one of the 328 wartime evacuees sent to Lampeter, Wales — an experience that left a deep imprint on his character. The war did not just mark his childhood; it shaped the man he would become.
John was a historian. His life was surrounded by books and papers. History was a lens through which he understood humanity. In his later years, he developed a particular fascination with the Pacific War, diving into research with the same curiosity that had guided him all his life.
When John wanted to relax, he turned to thrillers, reading and on TV. He travelled the world with an open mind, absorbing cultures, stories, and experiences. He loved films, music, and food, especially from India — a continent he always hoped to visit one day. His interests were wide, his mind always reaching for something new.
John was married twice. From his first marriage, he was father of two children, Jane and Paul, and grandfather to four grandchildren: Eleanor, Joel, Luke, and Amy.
John spent 37 happy years married to Martha Lucia. Together they were devoted parents to Alexander, and welcomed Leanna into the family with joy. In his later years, John found immense happiness in his grandson, Otis John, whose presence brought him light and comfort during the final chapter of his life.
After his quadruple bypass in 2006, John’s health began to decline, but his spirit never did. He kept going — travelling, studying, researching, and pursuing new interests. His curiosity kept him alive in the truest sense. Even when his body slowed, his mind never stopped moving. He remained engaged with the world, always wanting to know more, understand more, discover more.
John will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
He was one in a million, and he always will be.
