Biography of Gerald White
In loving memory of Gerald Edwin White who has sadly passed peacefully on 15th May 2026, at Oakland’s House Care Centre.
Gerald was born in Shirley Southampton to Frank Stanley Edwin White and Doris Edith Muriel White (nee Page).
Gerald grew up in Shirley Southampton, he left school at 15 to start a Fitter / Turner apprenticeship at the Hants & Dorset Motor Services (Bus Garage), Gerald left this position in 1958 to undertake his National Service in the Army which took him to Singapore and it is here where he met his beloved wife Doreen who was a Queens Alexandra Army nurse.
Whilst at the Singapore British Military Hospital, Gerald unfortunately contracted Polio, and was then medically discharged from the Army in 1960. On his return home, he recommenced his previous occupation at his former bus garage. His career progressed to his final position as Depot Service Engineer at Barton Park, Eastleigh. This instilled in Gerald a life-long interest in buses and anything motor vehicles related.
Unfortunately in 1994 at 54 years, he was medically retired from the bus garage due to an industrial accident.
Gerald was a life-long Saints fan, watching games at the Dell with his father, and later with his son Martin at St Marys, until ill health restricted his ability to attend matches.
Gerald was also interested in music particularly organ music, having learned to play the piano from an early age, and played keyboards at home.
Gerald also loved holidays in his caravan, motorhome and later cruises, enjoying many happy times with his family.
In later life Gerald developed an interest in Lawn bowls, later becoming the Match Secretary at the Totton & Eling Bowls Club, when he could no longer play. He had a formidable collection of trophies representing his interests in both bowls and snooker.
Gerald’s beloved wife Doreen sadly passed away 2017, he is now survived by his two sons David and Martin, daughter in law Tina, grandchildren Amelia and Oscar and great grandchildren Zachary and Thomas.
