Brian John Huggett (13 Nov 1953 - 17 Apr 2026)

I first met Brian in July 1987 when I joined the Civil Service. Within three weeks he asked me to play for the cricket club and we went on to play cricket together for over 30 years! It was also partly Brian's influence that I became a Trade Union Representative and I always regarded him as my Trade Union mentor. Brian also invited me on the "Huggett Tours" and we had so many enjoyable trips to France and Belgium. It was Brian who rekindled my interest in the First World War. Lastly, Brian you were my work colleague, my Trade Union Comrade, my cricket club team-mate, but most of all you were my great friend and I will miss you so much. Rest in peace Brian.

I first met Brian in 1987, when he became my very first - and pretty much my best - boss in the Civil Service, from which I’ve just retired. I couldn’t have been luckier. What began at work became a friendship that lasted long after I left in early 1990.

Those of us in “Section 2” at Bloomsbury DHSS were Brian’s first team after his promotion. We were a mixed bunch - different personalities, backgrounds and temperaments - yet he looked to bring out the best in each of us by listening, being interested in what made us tick, and generally having the ability to bring people, colleagues, union members and friends alike, along with him.

Brian was clearly devoted to his family, and he was also the glue that held together a loyal circle of friends who met for Friday drinks whenever he and they could. Those gatherings were enjoyable, full of lively - and sometimes vigorous - discussions about history, politics and sport. I tried not to miss them.

He shared his brothers’ interest in history, especially of the First World War, and the memorable “Huggett Tours”, which some of us joined, reflected that. I am glad to have a few photos from those early team days, along with more recent ones.

Privileged to have worked with Brian in Bloomsbury and known him as a friend. What a beautiful and empathetic man he was. His knowledge of history and a broad range of subjects to chat about, was a lovely way to pass an evening over a few pints. His love of sport, Millwall and cricket in particular, another way to pass a few hours in his excellent company. May his gentle soul rest in peace, he will be missed in a world where his like is not often found. Rest easy Brian, until we meet again 💕

I worked with Brian at Stratford Office, where were union reps together. He was a really good chap, kind, considerate and had a great sense of humour. Sadly missed.

I met Brian back in the late 80s through work, and from the very beginning he was a proper gentleman. He treated everyone with respect and was the sort of man you could always turn to for advice or help. A genuinely kind man and truly one of a kind.
I have wonderful memories of Brian and all his family, especially Sarah. I remember sitting on the bus going to work while she was on her way to school, always proudly talking about “my Uncle Bri.” Later on, she came to work with us as well. Such a lovely family with so many wonderful memories.
A true Millwall and Bermondsey man — what more could you ask for?

I first met Brian back in the early 70’s when we worked together at the London Fire Brigade, both in our 20’s then and we remained good friends ever since.

Back then, we spent many Sunday evenings, watching a band called Blunderbuss at the Thomas a Becket public house on the Old Kent Road. A few pints, loud music, always a good evening. Brian loved it.

Many other trips and holidays followed too, mostly in the UK, but even an excursion to Czechoslovakia, as it was called then. Wherever we went Brian was curious and interested and always good company.

You were a great friend Bri, thank you for everything. My condolences and best wishes to Marion and your family.
