John was born in Ospringe on 10th April 1949, the second son of Robert and Lavinia Gates. He attended Ospringe School and then Ethelbert Road Boys School. Upon leaving school at 15 John was employed by British Rail in the Signalling and Telecommunications Department first as an apprentice engineer and then held various roles within this field until becoming an assistant area manager and lastly a trainer, before retiring in 2004.

John met Susan at a Christmas party when they were both 15 and they married on 21st November 1970. Their first Son, James, was born in August 1978 and their second Son Tim in June 1982. In February 2021 the family grew again when their Grandson Joshua was born who was joined by Hannah in February 2023.

In later life John developed Chronic Kidney Disease which resulted in him receiving Dialysis. He died peacefully during the evening of 17th February 2026 at Kent & Canterbury Hospital. He is survived by Wife Sue, Sons James and Tim, Grandchildren Joshua and Hannah, and elder Brother Bob.

Sad to hear the news - always used to enjoy our "chit chats" even when you were assessing me.
And you always took an interest in the Faversham Area long after you had gone into training.
Rest In Peace John.
