In loving memory of Alan Edward Pott who sadly passed away on 24th January 2026 Our Dad Grandad and Great Grandad. Reunited with Violet. He worked hard to provide for his family and has left us with many happy memories. At family gatherings he was the one to provide fun and laughter. Most of his working life was at the Western Docks Dover and on the Channel Ferries and he always had interesting tales of celebrities he waited on as a steward. We were so lucky to have him as our Dad to provide for us and encourage us at every stage of our lives. His funeral will be a celebration for a life well lived.
Alan was the fourth child of George and Rose Pott. Born in Dover the family lived on Snargate Street and later in Balfour Road. Alan was the delivery boy for the grocer George Reason who’s shop was on corner of Balfour Road and Cherry Tree Avenue. He attended Barton Road School and was evacuated to Wales in WW2. Alan then worked for P&O on The Himalaya where he trained as a steward and learnt silver service. The ship sailed between Tilbury and Australia. He married Violet on 25th August 1951 . Together they had 3 children Janet Maureen and Peter..
Alan and Violet lived in a flat in Castle Hill and Alan did his National Service with Royal Engineers where he spent most of the time in the Officers Mess because of his P&O training.By the time Maureen was born the family had moved to Monks Way prefabs .Alan then worked at Western Docks as a porter and later as a steward on cross channel ferries including The Invicta. He met many famous film and TV stars and collected Autographs as he worked . Peter was born in the prefab and Alan was delighted to have a son. He had picked up the midwife on his motorbike..The family moved to Melbourne Avenue and Maine Close before Alan and Violet moved to their bungalow in Newlands Whitfield and Alan retired where he enjoyed his garden and greenhouse. He cared for Violet in the bungalow for 8 years following her stroke and she passed away in 2018. In 2020 Alan was moved into Alexander House Dover following a spell in hospital as his health declined. He was cared for there for over 5 years enjoying the entertainment until his health deteriorated and he slipped away peacefully with the support of staff who cared for him.
