Funeral Director
Leslie Kevin Harrod (“Les”) passed away on 30th January 2026, aged 71, after a short illness.
Born in Orsett and later making his home in Southend-on-Sea, Les spent his entire life along the Thames Estuary — a place he was deeply connected to and called home.
A devoted father to Kath, Lauren and Amy, and a much-loved father-in-law to Steve, Andrew and Connor. He was a proud grandfather to Niamh, Harriet, Tom, Layla, Myles and Fiadh — though even here the granddaughters kept the upper hand over the boys. Family meant everything to Les, and he took great joy in following the lives and achievements of his grandchildren.
Les joined the Gas Board in 1970 as an apprentice fitter and remained in the industry throughout his working life, building a respected career specialising in compliance. He genuinely loved his work and the people he worked alongside, forming friendships that lasted decades.
A lifelong Everton supporter, Les spent many happy days following the club and sharing the experience with friends who became an extended family. Away from football he enjoyed beer festivals, good company and conversation, and in earlier years was a keen tennis player.
Les will be remembered for his loyalty, his quiet humour, and the steady presence he brought to those around him. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and all who knew him.
The funeral will take place on Thursday 12th March, 12.00 at Basildon Crematorium, where we will pause to take in the view of the Thames he loved so much. We will all 'raise a glass' to Les afterwards at the Benfleet Social Club.
The family have ordered flowers, though anyone who wishes to add flowers is very welcome to do so. Donations, if desired, are gratefully received for the RNLI, a charity Les supported throughout his life. Please do whatever feels right and appropriate to you.
