Funeral Director
In loving memory of Ann Patricia Nisbet-Smith who sadly passed away on 10th January 2026, aged 90 years.
Ann was born in Lancashire on 30th March 1935. She attended Clitheroe Royal Grammar School and went on to study medicine at St Mary’s Hospital Medical School. She qualified in 1959 and completed her house jobs in Epsom Hospital. From there, she moved with her husband, Dugal, to the West Indies. She was appointed medical officer at Barbados General Hospital from 1960-63 and Port of Spain General Hospital in Trinidad from 1963-66.
On their return to the UK, she started her career in cytopathology as a clinical assistant at the Victoria Infirmary in Glasgow from 1970-1978. From there the family moved to London, and she continued in this field at UCLH, Northwick Park and the Royal Free Hospital as a consultant. She was involved in sharing and presenting research papers across the UK about cervical cytology and the connection of cancer with HPV. She had a wonderful team of colleagues, and she loved her job until she retired in 1996.
Ann loved horse jumping and rowing as a young woman, and reading, travelling, culture, archaeology and historical houses were all important to her. In her retirement, she and Dugal renovated a beautiful 16th century house in Suffolk, which gave them a lot of joy. She was a dedicated mother to her three children – Catherine, Sarah and Robert – and a kind grandmother to her six grandchildren. She was recently delighted to meet her great-grandson. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
