I met Delphine at Hart Plain Junior's School as a PTA mum making things to sell for Christmas and Mothering Sunday. We met in her resources centre surrounded by everything the teachers could ever wish for - from film strips and recorded school's programmes to a birds nest! I then joined the teaching staffand helped run the Reading Club with her. We spent time before school, in a cupboard, surrounded by books, hoping to encourage reluctant readers to enjoy reading. There were prizes for successful members, often painted china pieces created by Delphine. She loved the children and took them under her wing. I remember her sewing and pressing the pleats back into a little girl's school skirt after her struggling single dad had over laundered it.
Out of school I enjoyed going to classes with her to learn to make sugar flowers for cake decorating as we shared our pleasure in making wedding cakes.
A very special lady, I'm glad to have known.
