In loving memory of Iris Howes who sadly passed away on 9th January 2026, age 87 years.
Much loved mother, grandmother and friend to many.
Iris Hall was born in Church Gresley in 1938. After leaving school she worked briefly in T G Green & Co pottery . Then, in a change of career, Iris trained to become a State Registered Nurse at Burton General Hospital.
Moving to Stanley as a district nurse she met Colin Howes and in 1964 they were married. A year later saw the arrival of a son, David. In 1968 they had their second son, Steven. Moving to a house on Station Road, West Hallam in 1969, they had their third son, Kevin, the following year.
Sadly just over a year after Kevin's arrival, Colin suffered a fatal accident at work.
Iris juggled raising the three boys and working as a district nurse until 1989, when she took early retirement from nursing. She trained as a chiropodist and practiced locally for several years, before retiring.
By then she had moved to a smaller home on Beech Lane, still in West Hallam. In retirement she enjoyed a very active social life, holding positions of office in local groups, The WI and The Coffee Club; she also served as a parish councillor and attended church regularly.
Iris saw a decline in health during later years and was diagnosed with a cancer of the colon in October 2025. A fall in December saw a rapid decline which resulted in her passing away at home with her family at her side on 9th January 2026.
She forged many friendships over the years and one of her last wishes was that we tell her friends that she loved them.
