This page is to celebrate the life of Roger Somerville (pictured above on his 81st birthday Nov25), much loved husband, Dad, Grandpops (Popsie & Pop pops), brother, family and friend to many of you.

Roger's Bermondsey upbringing developed his sense of community, public service, and connecting with others. Roger lived with his parents, Fred and Flo and his sister, Dawn and was always "proud to be an Englishman", but particularly a Londoner.

Athletics, sport in general and the Boys Brigade, were a large part of Rogers life, providing values and skills he used in all his years. Roger and Margaret were married in 1965, celebrating their 60yr Diamond wedding anniversary in September 2025. In addition to his 3 children, 6 grandchildren, Jasper dog (who he is now reunited with), Rogers other 2 main loves were Charlton Athletic Football Club and the Metropolitan Police Service. His final role in active service was Detective Inspector, before moving into civilian roles.

Following a reluctant retirement, he continued to volunteer as a driver for the Royal Voluntary Service (RVS) and at Demelza charity shop in Petts Wood (supporting Children's Hospices). He continued to use his detective skills finding valuable donations and enjoy the camaraderie with all he met. As an avid reader, learning and being informed was always important to Roger, as well as having fun - we're sure you all have many fun memories with him!

As a family we adopted Rogers detective skills as his health became more challenged. He knew in his words, he was "in trouble".....
Roger had an unplanned quintuple heart bypass in July 2022, from which he never fully recovered. This may have been when he lost touch with many of you. After almost a year of medical input, research, tests and many months in specialists wards, Roger was diagnosed with Encephalitis, a rare degenerative brain disease, from which he sadly never recovered.
Rogers resilience and fortitude throughout the last 3.5years of his life was incredible, and he did his best. Until the end there was a twinkle in his eye and smiles for those supporting him. On 21st December Roger sadly passed away, with family by his side (and match of the day on TV!).

In his last wishes, Roger requested that if you're attending his funeral service, you wear your "own favourite club or team colours - shirts, jerseys, tops, scarves or ties"!

Flowers will be from immediate family only please. Roger requested donations to support charities important to him on his passing including;

Metropolitan Police Widows & Orphan Charity (now) https://met-cityorphans.org.uk/
British Heart Foundation https://www.bhf.org.uk/how-you-can-help/donate
Demelza https://www.demelza.org.uk/donate/
As a family, we've added Encephalitis International https://www.encephalitis.info/donate/

Roger won't have known he was going to succumb to such a rare and cruel condition. Support for research, education, awareness, prevention and treatment is critical. On behalf of Roger / Dad, we're passionate about supporting this. Donation links on the charity page only allow for 3 to be listed. Please copy & paste the domain above if you would like to support the 4th charity.

Please find the details for Rogers send off on this site and RSVP to let us know if you're able to attend the service or light refreshment afterwards at The Bulls Head. If you can't attend, and wish to have a link for online virtual attendance, then please message us your email address and leave your words on here.

We look forward to hearing your memories and stories of Roger (that are repeatable & not breaking any code!). Feel free to add them here, along with any photos you would like to share or get in touch with his family directly.
We'll always remember him with love and pride, and hope you do too. Some last words of wisdom from our special man, "Keep looking forward, looking back never gets you anywhere...."

Rest in Peace Roger / Dad....

What can I say about my mentor and dear friend. A fabulous copper with an eye for detail. A critic in a good way. Always willing to challenge and share his opinion and on many occasions he was right lol. He had this special skill for finding trouble and making mischief, but was always a gentleman. As he would say 'If you can't take it don't dish it out'.
As a Safety practitioner he was second to none. He loved London and was supremely proud of the Met Police. He made a difference and was loved and respected by all whom had the pleasure of meeting or working with him.
I'm an Arsenal supporter, so not a football fan as Roger would often quip. He dragged me to Southend vs Charlton one Boxing Day. What a laugh we had. Great memories.
After retirement Roger and I kept in close contact. He never sat still and was constantly on the go.
What came across strongly was how proud Roger was of his daughter and sons, not to mention his grand children and extended family.
I consider myself blessed to have known you and to have walked beside you on your journey through life my old mucker.
I look forward to having a drink with you in the afterlife and getting ripped to shreds for all the nice things I have said about you.
God bless you mate. Rest easy my friend.

  • Roger, was my very first volunteer driver when I started the Community car service, in Bromley. He was so very supportive of myself, our clients and the service. His very first client, was a lovely man with dementia, who often would not know where he was going or why. Roger dealt with him so wonderfully, with patience, care and a had real understanding of his particular needs. Over the years we worked together, he showed that same care to all our clients and also, our team of volunteers, of which we all were real friends not just co workers. His family were a great source of pride to him , his love for Margaret was second to none, he would often chat about them, his heart was right there on his sleeve, during those chats. He was a true Gentleman and a great friend to have and I'm proud to have known him. With love and best wishes to his family. Rest in peace dear friend

I’ve been thinking about you a lot while I’ve been traveling Pop pops, and every time the sadness creeps in, I seem to see a golden retriever or a Labrador that makes me smile as it is a little reminder of you❤️

To Jane Ashley and Daniel,
I first met your Dad back in 1965, when he and your Mum, as an engaged couple, knocked on my door to get the key of the maisonette next door with a view to buying it.
They were married later on that same year on September 11th which als happened to be the day that my first baby was born. They then became our next door neighbours for the next few years, so lots of lovely happy memories of that time living in Belvedere. Xxx

  • Thank you for sharing Jenny. I remember our Belvedere home well, they didn't move far from you once they left the maisonette!

I placed the news of Rogers death on a Police Site, "South London Old Bill" (SLOBS), on the Internet - I list the comments received and where codes have been used I have shown their meaning in brackets. The author is shown at the end of the message :-

"So so sad." (David Alford)

"Gentleman and an old school Guvenor, RIP boss. He came on a football tour with us during the days when you had to have a Guv with you" (Michael Collins)

"Very sad news to hear. Roger was a wonderful gentleman and guvenor and thankful for his support during my TDC (temporary detective constable) days. Sending my sincere condolences to all his family. May you rest in eternal peace Roger".
(Si Cunneen)

"Very sad to read this, Roger was a DS (detective sergeant) at Carter Street when I was there and an excellent detective, always helpful and supportive. Respect and RIP brother" (Murdo Peter Durrant)

"Rest in peace Roger. Knew him as a DS at MS (Carter Street) the a DI (detective inspector) at PG (Penge) - super lovely man and a quiet unassuming character. Funnily enough he came into my thoughts a few days ago" (Frank Ellul)

"Lovely man. Will be missed. RIP Roger" (Keith Robinson)

"Sad news, one of the nice guys. DI at PG" (Barry Waterman)

"Worked with Roger at Brixton. Nice guy." (Dale Wood).

Then a simple, well meant "RIP" from :- Alan Brooks, Teresa Edwaqrds, Patrick Hallissey, Keith Hicky, Rick Ioaannou, Neil Latterman, Darren Murphy, Andrew McCruise and Victor Smith.

From me "Worked with Roger in his uniform days at MR Rotherhithe - nice and likeable bloke until we met across the table tennis table, then he was a ******. The only one at the nick I never won against. Cheers mate".
