In loving memory of Peter Alan Belshaw who passed away on 19th September 2025.
Peter was born on the 7th of February 1940 in Nottingham. He was a brother to Shirley, Pat, Michael, Barbara, Doris, Margaret, David, Fred and Keith.
The family lived in Radford and Peter attended the local schools.
At the age of eighteen, Peter served in the Army School of Transport and rose to the level of Lieutenant Corporal.
He returned to civilian life and started working as a bus driver. Working on the same bus as a conductor, or clippie, as they were called was a young woman from Kilkenny, Ireland called Maisie. They started dating and married in Manchester, then moved back to Nottingham to be closer to family.
While working as a bus driver in Nottingham, around the time he met Maisie, he also befriended a man called Thomas Alphaeus Sutherland (Tom to his friends), who was a teacher from Jamaica, making his home in Nottingham in the early 1960s. Tom also worked with Peter and Maisie at the same bus company. The three of them became lifelong friends. Tom was Peter’s best friend, seen as a valued and loved part of his family, until his passing in 2018.
When Peter and Maisie had Paul in 1971, Peter provided for his family by working as an HGV driver, a job he did for most of his working life.
Peter enjoyed being a DJ in his spare time and he worked in a few pubs and clubs including The Wheatsheaf in Sneinton and Hucknall Miners Welfare club. Music was a big passion of Peter, and he enjoyed collecting records, which he’d play at every opportunity, gracing his home with such sounds as rock n roll, reggae, blues and country music.
He also enjoyed painting, particularly “Lowry” type paintings in water colour. He was also a brilliant cook, and he made a fabulous curry, which Maisie and Paul always looked forward to.
Peter also had an interest and deep respect for Native American people and their culture, which influenced many aspects of his own life and world view.
Peter and Maisie loved to dance together, either at home or when they'd go on their nights out. They were devoted to each other through 53 years of marriage. They both loved nature and enjoyed walking in the countryside together.
In 1996 Peter and Maisie moved to Loughborough and they loved living in the countryside. They then made their final move together to Gotham in 2000 until Maisie's passing in 2016.
Family holidays were spent travelling around the British Isles. They would often travel to Ireland to visit Maisie’s family. Peter was such a caring and loving dad to Paul and despite his driving job keeping him away from home, he spent as much time with him as he could, something they'd both make up for throughout their lives, enjoying a very loving father and son friendship.
When Paul and Tracey got together in 2015, she already had a daughter, Wynnie, aged 7 at the time. Peter and Maisie loved them both as family, like they were their daughter-in-law and granddaughter. They developed such a close friendship.
In retirement, Peter didn’t stand still. He volunteered at various charity shops in Nottingham, raising money for good causes.
Peter never remarried after Maisie died in 2016; He'd always say that Maisie was the only woman for him and he continued to love her and keep her memory alive until he passed away 9 years after.
Peter was kind, caring and loving. He was a sensitive man who could be initially quite quiet until he got to know you. He was so funny and he loved making people laugh. He absolutely loved watching Laurel and Hardy, which inspired his own sense of humour.
He loved people and cared deeply about the state of the world, and wanted to make it a better place, which he did in so many ways.
