In loving memory of Alan Wood who sadly passed away on 5th September 2025

Alan was born on the 15th January 1942 to Alexander and Elsie Wood.
He was the second of 3 brothers, the others being John and Robert Wood, who also are sadly no longer with us.

Alan initially worked for a dental practice in Long Eaton and at the age of 23, he qualified as a dental technician.
At the age of 25, Alan left the dental profession and went to work at the British Celanese company in Spondon.
Alan worked for British Celanese for 27 years, where he progressed to Shift Manager, having achieved a Diploma in Supervisory Studies at Derby Lonsdale College, at the age of 39.
In 1994 at the age of 52, he was made redundant from the British Celanese company, and went to work for Dartex Coatings Ltd company in Long Eaton in the chemical mixing room.
He worked at Dartex for 11 years before retiring at the age of 63.

Besides his wife, 2 sons, 5 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren, Alan devoted another large part of his life to the Scout Movement.
Alan joined the Scouts at a very young age and remained a member of that organisation for 57 years.
In his early years he led a Scout Group in Long Eaton, and when the family moved to Breaston in 1981, Alan got involved with the 1st Breaston Scouts, and eventually took over as Scout Leader in 1990 at the age of 48. Even after retiring from work at the age of 63, he still kept in touch with the Breaston Scout movement, acting as Vice Chairman on the local Scout Committee meetings, up until 2017 when Alan finally handed in his neckerchief and woggle at the age of 75.

Alan was a keen vegetable gardener and worked an allotment in Long Eaton for many years.
One of the main reasons, the family moved home to Breaston, was that the garden was big enough for Alan to devote half of it to his very own private vegetable patch.

During retirement Alan took up trout fishing and spent many a happy hour at Foremark Reservoir and Carsington Water, with his friends.

Alan was very much a man’s man. He was always the life and soul of any gathering, with a cheeky character, and a huge array of jokes, which he loved to tell whenever the opportunity arose.

Alan lived a full life and was many things to many people, but most importantly he was a family man. His sons Stephen and Mark would like to thank him for always being there and for his legacy off happy memories. From putting up tents in the pouring rain on holidays in Wales, to afternoon teas on West Park after watching him play cricket. From camping trips with the Scouts, to days out by the sea. From Christmas and Birthday parties, to family meals around the table with plates piled high with fresh vegetables. And finally for all the worldly advice and picking us up when we were down, and for being an excellent role model of how a person should be.

And finally, we leave the last word for the love of Alan’s life, Jill. They were married on the 19th December 1964 and stayed together for 59 years, until Jill passed away in 2023. Alan never got over the loss of his lifelong partner, with whom he had built a life time of happy memories. We take solace in the thought that they will now be together once more, for the rest of eternity, and we give thanks for their amazing legacy.

I will treasure the memories we shared and how much we had in common. And how fortunate I was to have a grandad like you in my life for so long. From watching war films or Bond in bed to playing mishevious pranks and jokes. From cosy caravan holidays in Whitby watching Peter Kay, to Karaoke bars in Teneriefe. You showed me how to be the soul of the party, and how to bring joy to others. I never forget finding you in the Bulls Head, where you had a dozen people hanging on your every word, awaiting the punch line. You poured your energy into your passions, hobbies and good deeds, whilst still finding the time to be present in a place where the door was always open. I hope to do the same by following your example. I often recall you singing "What a wonderful world" or "Zippady Doo Dar" just to help brighten the mood. We may have never caught any fish together, but the time was precious, and you made up for it by catching a sheep, which somehow didn't get a mention on your big day. You were a true scout master who certainly left the world a better place. Say hello to nan, and I hope Sammy isn't stealing your slippers in heaven. Lot's of love always, Craig, Jen and Evie.

In Loving Memory Of Alan.

We were truly fortunate that you and Jill came into our lives through the joyful union of our families. Over the years, whether in your home or at family gatherings, spending time with you was always a pleasure.

You had a remarkable gift for bringing laughter and light to every occasion - your sense of humour and storytelling were unforgettable, and your joke telling was legendary! You worked hard to provide for your family and were always there with support and sound advice whenever it was needed.

It was an honour to have known you!

May You Rest In Peace.

Mike, Richard, Geraldine, Charlotte & William Atkinson.
