In loving memory of Patrick McGeehan who sadly passed away on 23rd August 2025
Patrick McGeehan born 17th September 1940 in London, Walthamstow E17
Husband to Janet, Father to Gavin, Jacqueline, Philip, Paul & Mark.
In 1957 Dad started his career with J.Russell and Company (owned by lord
Vestey) as an apprentice marine engineer working on various company ships, these
included – Glen Line, Blue Funnel, Elder Dempster, Palm Line, Blue Star Line etc in
the London docks.
In 1962 he went deep sea with P&O Shipping Co sailing on the Chusan, Oronsay,
Orion, Ballarat, Balranald, Bendigo.
Visiting Australia, India, France, Germany, Holland, turkey, Arabia, Egypt, Yemen, Italy etc.
Starting as Junior Engineer finishing as Fourth Engineer obtaining part a 2nd class certificate D.O.T.
Started as Fourth Engineer with British Rail in 1966 sailing on the Hampton &
Shepperton Ferries, - SS Invicta, Dover, Hollyhead Ferry 1, Maid of Orleans, St
Patrick, Normannia, Maid of Kent, Lord Warden, Vortigern, Hengist, Horsa, St
Anselm, Anderida, St Christopher, Roi Bauduin, Artevelde.
Promoted to Chief Engineer in 1971 at that time he was the youngest Chief Engineer in
British Rail U.K. (but not for long).
In 1977 Dad was made Assistant Superintendent Marine Engineer responsible for
operation certification maintenance and repair of five ships, the Western Docks Dover
including the ferry dock and pump house also Folkestone harbour and the marine
workshops (packet yard) with 200 men.
In 1980 he went back to sea and sent to Harland & wolf Belfast to oversee building of
the St Christopher for eight months.
1990 retired.
Dad had many hobbies and was always busy enjoying something.. be it Golf, classic cars, boating on his friend's steam boat, walking, gardening; but most of all cycling.
Dad was always cycling somewhere, even Lands end to John O'groats! Cycling into his 80's!
Always stopping for a chat, always smiling and laughing.
He was much loved and will be deeply missed xx
