Mike was taken from us on 3rd April 2025, having suffered a heart attack, doing something that he had loved doing all of his life, watching the Saints.

Mike was born and raised in Southampton and spent his whole life in the city, spending the majority of his working life serving the city and the nation, as a Labour councillor and central office staffer. He was awarded an MBE for services to politics in 2017.

He loved nature and the environment and his contributions to natural history, locally and nationally, will live on through his photography, artworks and books.

Mike leaves behind his partner, Jan, and brother and sister, Brian and Val and he will be sorely missed by all who knew him and loved him.

Donations can be made to the Hampshire & IOW Wildlife Trust, on this page, or to the Labour Party, by copying the link below into your internet browser.

Mike was always so wise, so astute, so politically brilliant. He taught me an enormous amount when I was just starting out in politics, including the dos and donts of an unwinnable by-election in Romsey in 2000. I was sad not to be able to attend his funeral in person but enjoyed the brilliant tributes made about him by friends, family and political colleagues via the video link. He will be very sadly missed by the Labour movement as a total legend! Rip Mike.

Mike was a great inspiration and support to my son Rich Green in his work for Labour. In particular I remember Rich telling me of Mike's speech and the story of the two young mums who wanted to thank Tony Blair for Sure Start.
Thanks so much Mike.

I worked with Mike in the SE Regional Labour Party team. He was amazing to work with - incredibly supportive on both professional and personal levels.
When our paths crossed recently, the conversation not surprisingly turned to politics and football. More football than politics.
As a Foxes fan we talked about visiting each other when our teams nest faced each other.
I will be thinking of Mike this Saturday at the King Power when City face the Saints.
My thoughts and prayers are with Jan and the family.

Have only just heard this sad news. Following your last entry on BlueSky, it’s a shame you didn’t see Saints win again. Will miss your posts on the socials.
