In loving memory of Roy Sharman who sadly passed away on 21st December 2015. Roy was born in Lowestoft in Suffolk in 1924, and grew up in the first half of the 20th century. After school, he first worked as a clerk, before enlisting in 1942 in Blackpool. He served in a number of countries including Egypt, India and on the Continent.
He met May and they were married in 1950 in Lowestoft. Imagine the delight of Roy and May expecting their first child, only to have the double delight of twins Lesley and Carol.
Roy had a good career - he started at the bottom in a Builders’ Merchants company in Lowestoft, and was transferred to the Great Yarmouth branch, becoming a Managing Director working from the head office in Norwich. After a takeover by Coalite he worked in Nottingham for the last two years of his career, setting up their Builder’s merchant branches in the North.
Roy was a member of the Worshipful Company of Builders’ Merchants. Membership is by invitation only and is a measure of the member’s contribution to the industry. It is a livery company of the City of London, and as a result Roy had the freedom of the City of London.
Roy was very keen on sport and encouraged his daughters to be as well. He played football at school and later for a team called Lowestoft Wanderers winning a number of trophies and medals in the Norfolk League. He was also a Norwich City supporter. Roy’s other sport was golf and he played for many years at Gorleston Golf Club and was Captain there. He took part in many competitions and even got a plaque for getting a hole in one - on the 7th.
