In loving memory of David John Daykin who sadly passed away on 20th February 2025.

A much-loved family man, who enjoyed the company of friends, the laughter of gatherings and the happiness of everyone coming together over a good roast beef dinner.

Born in London just before the war, he met and married his wife of 55 years, Beryl, in 1958. Wanting to give their new family a better start in life, they moved first to Tonbridge, where they had Amanda and Adam, and then in 1973 to Pembury. David was a very sociable man and he and his wife will be remembered by many for the wonderful parties they hosted together. Beryl would be in charge of food, while David, who became an avid wine maker, would provide the beer, wine and champagne.
A founder member of Tonbridge Wine Makers, he played an active part in running the club for many years and formed friendships that would last decades.
He worshipped his grandchildren, Douglas, Thomas, Hannah, Sophia and Benjy, who in return enjoyed nothing more than Grandad’s yarns that bought a lot of fun into their lives.
After losing Beryl 12 years ago, he remained in Kent for a few years before moving to Caterham, to be closer to Adam and Sarah, where in his latter years he still retained his cheeky sense of humour.
A kind and undemanding man, he will be missed by many.

The family hope that, if possible, you will be able to join them on the 28th of March to give Dave the send-off he so truly deserves.

Many good memories of making cider and helping Dave with assembling the equipment he had designed and made both in wood and metal. Pressing apples could be a messy business and we all wore black aprons and wellies. The other memory is working in the vineyard to Dave's directions and driving to Chapel Down at Tenterden after picking with the grapes in our old trailer. All fun!

Rest in Peace. Many fond memories of every Saturday at the vineyard and down in the winery making many different vintages from English grapes. Always enjoyed Dave's company. He was a good friend.

I feel very privileged to have known Dave and thoroughly enjoyed our time together on Wednesdays. He was the highlight of my week and in his presence, time was not an issue. Listening to his stories brought me back in time and comparing our lives was great fun. I will never forget his Penny Bare Bums story and how he learnt to swim. I googled this event and every word Dave said is true. The stories were remarkable and I could listen to them for hours. Dave was funny, witty, kind, selfless, tenacious and beautiful human being and I am going to miss him greatly.

Rest easy, Mr. Daykin. I knew him most when Adam and I were teenagers so it feels strange to call him Dave! I recall plenty of nights when several scruffy, teenage herberts would stay the night at his house in Pembury, and he would graciously give his hospitality, and home brew, but was probably upstairs listening intently for any tomfoolery. The famous catch-phrase of, “and don’t forget, lads…..” would come out to remind us what to do before we s crashed.
He was a kind, resourceful and interesting man who has raised a lovely family. He will be sorely missed.

  • My late stepmother, Joan Abbott, would no doubt have wanted to pass on condolences had she been around to do so. She, and my now stepbrothers Mark and Gary Abbott used to live opposite the Daykins in Heron’s Way.

Winnie and I could not have wished for better neighbours. We enjoyed many wonderful meals/getogethers and Dave helped me lay 5 cubic yards of concrete in our very early days. Our niegbours Ron and Kay Thelma and Harvey Molly and Alan were the very best.
