In loving memory of Susan Buttolph who sadly passed away on 5th February 2025

As many people know, Susan bravely & stoically battled breast cancer for 7 years having first been diagnosed in January 2018. Indeed, her bravery is further emphasised by the fact that shortly after being diagnosed, she slipped on some wet stairs at work & broke her ankle, so had to also contend with that injury whilst undergoing her first rounds of chemotherapy.

But, she never complained, carried on working & took all of her treatments in her stride, although years of chemotherapy eventually & inevitably took their toll.

She was, of course, greatly helped by the care & encouragement of her friends & family. Huge credit is also due to all of the nurses that attended her during her various treatments - including Julie, Claire, Slavka, Liza & Sharon (apologies if any names have been missed). And her wonderful oncologist, Doctor Daniel Epurescu deserves special mention for his willingness to find the best medication for Susan. He was not only her oncologist, but also became a dear friend

Susan’s wish was that flowers just be restricted to family, please. She has, however, chosen two very deserving charities should you be able to / wish to make a donation.

The first of these is Priscilla Bacon Lodge Support Group. This is the very highly respected local hospice where Susan was very well cared for in her final days.

The second is ORCA (orca.org.uk), an organisation devoted to the protection of whales, dolphins & porpoises.

Any donation to either cause would be a terrific tribute to Susan’s memory. Please gift aid if you are able.

Thank-you.

Paul

Combining Susan's photo with her nomination ORCA, we feel the words of Helen Lowrie-Marshall's poem 'Afterglow' may be appropriate:
"I’d like the memory of me
To be a happy one,
I’d like to leave an afterglow
Of smiles when life is done.

I’d like to leave an echo
Whispering softly down the ways,
Of happy times and laughing times
And bright and sunny days.

I’d like the tears of those who grieve,
To dry before the sun
Of happy memories that I leave
Behind - when day is done."

We cherish your memory Susan:
"A butterfly lights beside us, like a sunbeam …
and for a brief moment, its glory
and beauty belong to our world …
but then it flies on again, and although
we wish it could have stayed,
we are so thankful to have seen it at all."

Dear Paul,
It was an honour and privilege to have been part of Susan’s care, and I witnessed firsthand the strength, grace and courage she carried throughout her journey. Susan left a lasting impression on everyone around her and she faced all the challenges with incredible resilience and dignity. I know that no words can ease the pain of this profound loss, but I hope that the love you shared and the memories you built together will bring you comfort. My thoughts are with you and your family.
With heartfelt sympathy,
Dr. Daniel Epurescu
