Funeral Director
Catherine Patricia Watson (nee’ Spencer) who has died aged 78 was a familiar face to many in Silsden in the 1980’s and 90’s through her work as bar manager of the British Legion Club (subsequently Sunnybank Social Club) and other bar work at various local public houses such as the Red Lion, Punch Bowl and The Grouse Inn. In these roles she was an enthusiastic promoter of charity fund raising in sponsored events and an advocate and participant in the darts and dominoes competitions.
Catherine was the daughter of Cedric and Ruth Spencer. The sister of Craig Spencer. The mother of Darren Watson and Erika Mitchell. She was married to George Richard (Rick) Watson between 1970 and 1993.
Catherine was educated at Hothfield Street Secondary Modern School from 1957 but contracted tuberculosis which resulted in some missed schooling (due to hospital confinement), but she worked hard and always claimed she had the opportunity to go to “Grammer School” but that she chose to remain where her friends were instead.
In her early years of employment she enjoyed her work at Brown & Muffs (Rackhams) in Skipton. While her children were of school age. Catherine then moved on to work for Peter Black at the Lawkholme Lane Factory.
Later in her working life, she worked as a Personal Assistant for her partner Kenneth Gatehouse’s Daughter at Swanston Investments and later for Berry, Birch and Nobel.
Catherine’s partner Kenneth died in 2009 and Catherine continued to live in the home they shared in Linthwaite, Huddersfield. Catherine expressed a wish to return to Silsden but ill health and poor eye sight produced anxieties that would prevent this from happening in the last year of her life.
Family felt it was only fitting that she now return to Silsden to rest in peace with family members past and present nearby.
