Words of Memorial by Bob Alexander:

Robert Alexander
(Boxhill Farm and Alexander Motors)
Robert died peacefully at home on the 6th October aged 91.

He had lived at Boxhill Farm for almost all of his long life, initially taking it over from his dad as a dairy farm with his brother Jim. From an early age, however, his real passion was cars, and he built his own kit car with friends in his early twenties.
At the same time, he travelled the UK and Europe to watch motor racing events, and he also supported his cousin Ian in his early motor racing career.
During the war, he was evacuated to Scotland to stay with family and he maintained close relationships with them throughout his life. He spent his national service as driver to the local commanding officer and missed out on the overseas missions of his regimental colleagues. He married Barbara, and they had three sons, Bob, Ian and Bruce.
In the 1970s, he converted his hobby to a job and set up Alexander Motors on the farm. Working there with four friends, they serviced, repaired and bought and sold secondhand cars until he retired. He almost regarded this job as a 24/7 hobby, but he did also make time for occasional tenpin bowling trips and long weekends of golf in Scotland.
Unfortunately, Barbara died at 66 and Robert changed his retirement plans. He then spent many years travelling Scotland, Europe, America, Canada and Australia with family, especially his cousin Ian. Robert was always known for his positive attitude and his willingness to do anything for family and friends - never mind the time of day or distance involved.
He travelled alone to Scotland in June this year but, on his return, his health deteriorated and, such was his wish, he died at home after a short illness.
He will be sorely missed by sons, grandchildren, extended family and friends.

Robert was a wonderful, caring and generous person, who I will remember most for always driving up and down the country - long hours never seemed to bother him! You will be missed, Jacqueline and Don xxx

(uncle) Robert has been in my life, all my life. From the earliest trips up the farm with mum and dad (drinking fresh milk, and tea/biscuits from Auntie Barbara), through to him supplying me with the odd car after another little 'accident'.
As I grew up, although I did not see him so often, I but would occasionally catch up when I met him around mum and dads.. He was a great friend to dad (Eric Mansfield) especially after mum had died.
He will be sorely missed by all that knew him
But I am pretty sure if they need a car delivery service in heaven, they have just found their man. X

I first met Robert in 1975, going up to the farm with Phil Furlonger evenings and weekends doing car repairs for Robert. We got that much work,so in January 1976 we both left Dorking Motors and Alexander Motors went from strength to strength.
For me (Sandra)....Mick came home one day and said that he had seen a card in the local shop window asking for a cleaner. He proceeded to tell me the number.. I said...'That's Roberts number?' He said yes...
There was no card in that shop window. Robert just needed someone to help out a bit after Barbara had passed away. So that's what I did. I became Roberts cleaner for 25 years plus! A bit of gardening, cleaning the odd car and painting. We shared humour and put the world to right. He was always happy, never complained. And kept me on my toes. We will never forget him and will miss him very much. Wednesday mornings will never be the same. Thank you Robert for just being you. X

Robert, my dad Bill and I had many great times together, spending hours working on all sorts of vehicles in their garage. I have lots of wonderful memories of those times.
Robert was a big part of my growing up years and for that I am truly grateful and is something I will never forget.
